Setting pinion height on Rover diff.

I am trying to work out how to check the pinion height on a Rover diff, the workshop manual says to use a special service tool, which is a dummy shaft through the diff carrier bores and a slip gauge between the dummy shaft and the end of the pinion. My question is, does anybody know what the distance should be from the centre of the diff carrier bores to the end of the pinion. I can make up a dummy shaft and slip gauge if I know the distance. Or is there someone in the Southeast Queensland area that has the special service tool?

    Many Thanks, Mick.

    Diff pinion height

Don't bother with a 'special' tool, beg borrow or steal a vernier height gauge. Measure the distance from the journal C/L down to the pinion this should be set at 3" (for metric or imperial diffs) but you cannot use this method with the P38 (stumpy) diff as the pinion face is not machined.
    Hope this helps
