    Done Transfer Box

Hi there I drive a Landrover TD5 130 Defender 2003 model and I took some bad advice from a bloke in Newman WA who swore blind that there was nothing wrong with my vehicle I had some noise coming out from the gearbox/transfer box area and this bloke told me that there was nothing wrong and my intuition told me that the transfer box was dry of oil to cut a long story short Ive stuffed the transfer box I drove it in high range for months and then it gave up the ghost it does engage high range sometimes but jumps out almost immediately Ive found a reconditioned box my question is have I done any damage to the gearbox is there anybody who can explain to me what I should also be doing when I replace the transfer box. Another question is where can I look for recon transfer boxes I have found one but would just like to see what else is out there.

no damage to the box with the possable excpetion of some accelerated wear of the output splines.

I'd drop the whole box and refresh the seals on it as well as the clutch and box mounts while it was out and depending on the K's since you last did them ID be looking at the propshaft UJ's.

also check that your replacement tcase has the right ratio in it.

Thanks very much for that advice I will follow it up with the mechanics this week does that mean that the vehicle is still good I have checked that the ratio is correct the things that you advise me to do will that make it a lot more expensive im budjecting five thousand dollars for the exercise which includes the cost of the recondiotned box and thanks again

nope $5k for that work would be a touch of overkill.

you even get to replace the flywheel with a brand new one in that budget.

removing the clutch/flywheel and replacing them with brand new items as part of replacing the rear main seal should ad no more than 1 hour to the labour cost of dropping the box and you pretty much have to remove the engine mounts to get the tcase out and off anyway.

if you want to cut costs you can replace the tcase without dropping the box but generally its not that much more effort to remove the box completely and its generally a better move as its easier to put the tcase onto the box while both are on the bench.
