    Starting problem

I've moved my question from the Defender forum to here for more input I hope.
    Quick recap:
Td5 would not start had electrical power but nothing else.
Found fuel pump fuse had blown, replaced it, motor and pump turned over but not running properly (Sounds like running on 4cyl not 5) plus fuel pump making a surge type sound, and fuel filter filling up.
When ignition is turned to OFF then back to ON fuel pump sounds like it's filling the fuel filter( like as if the fuel runs back into the fuel tank) does this every time.
Pulled off fuel filter (it was a new one) no rubbish when fuel tipped out.
So I lifted the tray up and removed fuel pump cannot see anything amiss.
I don't think it's the pump, but I'm at a lose as to what to do next.
Did ring RANGE-Rov where I had my gearbox kit fitted and new housing ($1300) but no help from them.
    Any ideas ?
And i'm still not opting for "Just burn the ******* thing already) from the cook

sounds like the fuel pressure regulator might be stuck full open OR the pump is sucking air, fill the tank to the absolute brim and see if that sorts it.
