Hi guys, I have a 2003 Disco that has a little work done a couple of weeks ago and a new problem has raised it's head.
I took it in for a service before a trip, (just one day before so time was tight my mistake) and a couple of phone calls later and I need new brake pads, new rotors and the wheel bearing in the front passenger side was shot. The bearings in the D3 are part of the hub so the lot needed to be replaced. LR had none in stock and we were taking the kids camping with friends for 5 days the next day so I went in search of a second hand unit. Found one at Moorooka, collected it and delivered it to Knights (who were great, very accommodating, stayed back late to fix it etc etc) and picked it up about 7pm.
I noticed a vibration / drone / hummm noise (kind of similar to what happens to come cars when you wind just one window down at highway speeds, you feel that imbalance in the air where it feels you ear drums are humming and the air is vibrating ????), that came on about 90kmh and mostly goes about 110kmh.
The front wheel bearing was shot and when I turned to the right the wheels sometimes squeeled, I put it down to the wheel alignment but turns out it was the bearing. I knew new tyres where coming so I waited re the wheel alignment.
So when the hub was replaced with the second hand unit the axle and CV came with it. I don't know what was or wasn't used, I haven't hassled Knights yet since I've been waiting to get new tyres and a wheel alignment to se if that was the issue. But I did notice last night the problem is made worse under acelleration, when coasting down a hill the vibration/drone drops off a bit, but if I accelerate it gets stronger.
Any ideas ??????

as Tank says un-joint in front drive shafts are very well know cause of this especialy the rear joint of front shaft as a/c drip drips right on joint ,if it has failed either get it rebuilt with greasable nipples or buy one with greasable nipples then relocate the a/c drip so it does not drip on anything
cheers Kelvin
Thanks guys !!
Does the vibration change directly with engine revs? When you coast at say 60 - 80 km down a hill in neutral, does the vibraion cease? If you rev the engine in neutral, whilst coasting, does the vibration occur? Need to isolate engine to drive train origin of vibration.
Well it's not the drive shafts, axles or uni joints, the guys at the shop are thinking the only thing left is the second hand hub that was fitted.
thats a easy check jack the wheel up and see if there is any movement in the hub/wheel ,another one is climb underneath the engine and look up at your engine mounts if there is rubber pushing out the hole or close to pushing out the engine mounts are stuffed check gear box tc mounts to
cheers Kelvin
Well I have the car back, it was with the guys for 4 days but they haven't solved the riddle. They tried a new axle, replaced the hub with a brand new one, checked the uni joints and engine mounts and a couple of other things and they can't find the problem.
Anyone have any ideas ??
Key points are the vibration comes on with a resonating drone noise through the car, the noise is very similar to the resonating air vibration that you get in some cars when you wind just one window down at highway speeds. I can't think of what could make a vibration and the resonating noise simultaneously, and why only between 90 and 110 kmh ??
I'd love to sort it out![]()
Was it there at all before the work was done? Even a faint hint of it?
If it wasnt then it has to be related to something they worked on somewhere.

No, it wasn't there. Hard to answer if there was a hint of it, with BFG just about due to be replaced the road noise is pretty noticeable, but I don't think there was a hint prior.
