Agree - run a nice big fat cable from the -ve on the batt to a mounting bolt on the engine - alternator bracket would be best.

But get your radiator rodded if it hasn't been done in the last 5 years to be on the safe side

I'll vote for a Bung gauge .... Replace the temp sender unit on the motor....
Had the same thing happen in my Ford EA

    Cheers

    HI Mike,

Already replaced the temp sender unit.

    Thanks

    Hi Shaun,

The gauge will either be earthed with its own wire to a common earth point for the dash or the housing might carry the earth to the mounting frame.

Not familiar with D1's, only RRC's. 99% It will be the prob. Someone will chime in with D1 info.

    cheers, DL

    HI All,

So, the following has been done:

    • Replace the temp sender unit
    • Replace the water pump with a genuine part
    • Radiator has been rodded
    • Wiring has been checked in the dash, and grounding appears to be fine

And still the temp gauge shows normal, then all of a sudden it shows overheating for about 3 seconds, and the drops back to normal.

    Any other ideas?
Anyone know where i can get an analog temp gauge in the Brisbane area?
Also, anyone in the Northern side of Brisbane that is possibly able to help confirm the wiring / earthing? Im always happy to supply the beer (wine) and some good meat on the BBQ... please

    Regards
    Shaun

Check out this web site - I'm about to fit one as an added level of safety and peace of mind.

ENGINE WATCHDOG TM2, Engine Coolant Temperature Alarm, Gauge & Sensor

It wont stop any overheating but it will definitely let you know if it is.

as to your problem could you be getting an air lock? just a thought

You said you've got a heat sensor on the motor and radiator.
If its something like an engine watchdog or similar that shows temp and has a settable alarm point, then I'd forget about the original gauge.
Stick a bit of tape over it if it worries you to see it in the red

Given that you've proved its a gauge issue and not a real overheating one, I reckon your biggest risk at the moment is having an accident while watching the gauge and not the road..

Thanks for the info.. Will definately check out the watchdog.

You mention an airlock? Where exactly would the airlock be happening?

    Thanks

still sounds like a bad earth issue.

On the RR's which is all I really know but should be basically the same, you can often make the gauge jump to the red by simply loading up the electrics, ac blower fans to full, rear demister on, headlights all on etc. That usually categorically proves the earth issue, as its often a case of the earth wire breaking down under a combination of both heat and load, and hence it works fine most of the time, but that 3 seconds might be when something like an ABS pump kicks in and pulls a good 20 amps for a short time.

just an idea. Probably wild though.

Love all the electronic stuff ..... but analogues never tell ferbies

    .... Good ol' gauges ....

... You even get to score a oil pressure gauge ..... (after you have altered the fittings)

    Cheers
