    Bolt on Portal Drop Boxes?

OK, Im not a guru on portals, but Im having a look into it for a friend of mine. I have mentioned elsewhere he is smitten with the GQ/GU based unit from Mark's Adaptors here in Australia, and is looking at how to integrate that into his already massively modified D2.

Ive been reading through a lot of old threads here on portals, and found a reference to a website in a thread that was about three years old.

the website is www.killeraxles.com 3 yrs ago they were "developing" a portal kit. Now it looks like they are done.

It appears they have bolt on drop boxes for Rovers....for about $8400 (set of 4) at current exchange rate. See here: Google Translate

My knowledge is not good enough to read through Google's translation of the german, and properly understand it, but if anyone wants to have a crack at whether this works for a D2, and what else might be needed, then I will happily read on.

There is a big long thread on here where someone (in Germany) fitted them to his 130.

There is nothing specific on the site about D2s, however They say they can make them fit almost any axle.

Yepp and what great portals they were.
Sadly Mal Storey isn´t making them anymore and I finally got my hands on a set of these.

Because I couldn´t get them for years I was looking for someone who could build me a set and that´s how I found Tibus.
It wasn´t too difficult to persuade him to build bolt-on portals for a Defender, just took me 5 months and a lot of calls

As things go, it´s now that I finally find the MaxiDrive portals (after trying to get a set for more than 5 years )

    So long,

    Robert

    Bolt on Portal Drop Boxes?

I have just picked up a set of the maxi drive version to fit to my 130, still awaiting their arrival. I looked into various versions. Your mate with the D2, if he goes down the Marks Adapter line, he can use GU fronts and 80 series landcruiser rears to align the pumkin then make the suspension mods. There are two ratio choices-a 1.4-1 & a 1.2-1. By the time he buys the diffs to exchange and aquires some lockers he will be over $20k. Tibus in Germany was very prompt with his email reply and is currently working on a 1.2-1 ratio version that should be available by next April/May. Currently he has a 1.6-1 version. The exchange rate makes these a better option, less hassle. The problem is the laws governing modifications to vehicles again comming under review. If you wait for the sensible touring version you may have missed the opening to install and engineer them.

I strongly recommend opting for the lowest ratio available, even if you have fit higher !.003:1 transfer case gears or an overdrive to restore your cruising speed.. An important benefit of portals aside from ground clearance is that the gear reduction at the hubs greatly reduces the stress on the other axle components, diffs, halfshafts, cv joints etc.The lower the hub ratio the stroger these components effectively become, and we all know that landRover diff axle components need all the help they can get.
Oilworker, Did your 130 come with the Salisbury rear diff or did you swap it in?
    Wagoo.
