Another V8 Auto into Stage One question...

    Hi guys

I know this has been discussed before, but I am looking at buying a complete, 1986 Range rover ZF 4 speed auto, transfer case, and complete setup, to convert my Stage One to Automatic...

Is this a good Auto to install...

It comes with all torque convertor, flywheel, oil cooler lines, oil cooler, tailshafts front and back, transfer case, shifter console and is meant to be out of a complete running vehicle..

I understand that the tunnel will need some alteration, and crossmembers, etc will need modifying, but if anyone has done it, I would like any infor before I purchase and freight it up.

i have been looking for an older 3 speed, and having trouble finding one...

I like the idea of a 4 speed, but wondering if these are full time 4wd box, as my stage one is...

I will never really be using it for 4wd, more of a weekend, vehicle, and most work done will be highway kms...

Thanks, in advance, and im sure its all here, but having trouble finding exactly the answers I need on here...

    Chad

    Hi Chad,
Yeah, the 4 speed auto Rangie is full time 4WD, same as your Stage 1. All Rangies are full time 4WD in fact.

Chad, you should really know its history, as if they are not looked after with oil and filter changes they are the single most expensive overhaul item on a Range Rover at about 3-4K . They are called ZF2HP22.
Remember unless it has been rebuilt at some stage that it is about 25 years old. How many Ks? If over 250KK walk away.

You should be able to get a late stronger 4HP22 from a late 90s Disco for a reasonable price, but you get what you pay for.
Be sure to get the kickdown cable linkage to the accelerator linkage as trust me this can be the most frustrating thing to fabricate.
Hmm you have carbs don't you. Then try to get a kickdown linkage from a RR from around 84 with a 727 3 speed.

yeah mate single Holley now, on an Edelbrock manifold...

    Thanks alot for the info,

I know it sounds stupid, but its for my Rat Rodded, stage one, im also using as a Tow vehicle to Tow the race car back after a run at the Drags..

Just tried it with a mates car last weekend, and was a real Bastard, because of the stop starting, all the time, with a rope, and really hard clunking on the box and clutch etc...

My wife usually has the job of TOW CAR driver, and really don't think the manual will be any good for her.

I was probably going to use a Ratchet type shifter, changing it manually, as I really don't use it much just trying to make it easier, for what i did build it for...

I understand what you are saying about the rebuild costs, and maybe the 3 speed would be better to wait for...

For the $500, with transfer, tailshafts, shifters, everything for Auto Conversion I was going to give it a go.... but maybe i should have 2nd thoughts...

Is the later d1 ZF not Computeriised also??

    Thanks again Chad
