I was going to do a write up and post it as a new thread, then this thread appeared and thought it fitted in. Will try and take a photo and work out how to post the pics in the near future - the wife is away with the car over the next few days.

I have randomly left it "on" over a period of 5 or 6 tankfulls and "off" over 5 or 6 tankfuls and have done this cycle a few times and monitored fuel usage. Each cycle include a 2hr road trip, and a mix of city and country driving. This is our daly driver and my wife drives it the most, and was unaware of when the fan was on or off.
When comparing fuel use between the two and taking the best economy when the fan was off and the worst economy when the fan was on I averaged atleast 1 to 2 L/100kms better with the fan on.
My vehicle is a 02 TD5, with the only mods being bullbar+winch, 50mmlift and 245/75 mud tyres.
Crash - I'm not questioning your fuel measurements, but it would surprise me if the effect of a computer fan was significant relative to the huge suction effect of the engine?
Always looking for creative new ways to get bogged... :whistling:

76 RR...sold coz fuel was expensive at 70c/l
    93 200 Tdi Disco...old faithful...sold to make way for...

Me too,the dremel is already out and waiting
Since the fitment of the mantec snorkel,i think the engine needs more air, hope this mod gives better air flow

Particularly when it has to go through all the plumbing of the intercooler before reaching the intake.

I did it originally to disprove the effects of the Hiclone, and was surprised by my findings. With the fan on I have seen an economy improve not much. The test have been conducted over multiple tank fulls with very similar driving on all tanks. Again, my wife who drives the vehicle the most has been unaware of when the fan was on or off, so "driving habits" were not modified.

I would consider it highly likely the effect of the fan is about modifying the air flow through the MAF, making it read wrong. MAF's usually have a grid or mesh to straighten the air flow. In other words you would get a similar result from jiggering the MAF electronically.

Being diesel, it may actually be the MAF with the issue.
There is no throttle plate on a diesel unless you have Euro3 type EGR connected with a butterfly valve and this is sticking blocking flow.
On overun the turbo will take time to spool down all the while passing airflow to the cylinders. This airflow is still higher than idle airflow so if you have an intermittent fault arising from the sudden demand change, the MAF is either dirty or faulty or you have a blockage to the airbox, ie clogged air filter. No matter what patches and scientific tools you apply or invent, your trying to make a new type of bandaid to put on a cut that usually would take stitches.
The hiclone and all the other "turbo mini fans" have already been dispelled a number of times as snake oil.

If all these "ideas" were so good, why havent major manufacturers picked up and patented the ideas????? Why would Garrett and all the other turbo makers persist with current turbo styles????
I really just can understand how people get sucked in with all these things....

    Cheers

    Andrew
