    Swapping Defender transfer case

I inspected a Defender today that has a Disco auto gearbox and transfer case. The transfer case was installed first, and the gearbox some time later.

I found the gearing to be a bit high. It was a bit too sluggish from take-off, but revved nice and low at 100kph. I'm thinking a Defender transfer case would be better for me and my type of driving.

Anyone know how much it would cost to supply and fit a good Defender transfer case, or whether some tweaking will fix the slow take-off with the current Disco transfer case?

Not sure I understand but a good 4000 RPM stally will leave any ratio change for dead !!!! No more sluggish take off , and if thats too slow and your 60ft time is up then a nice Transbrake will really get it it out of the Hole . Whats your best ET ?
Ooops fergot than trans is one of those ZF22 thingys , week as **** .so strengthen it first !!!

I've seen reputable places do a rebuilt TC for around 1200 exchange.

If the box itself is in good nick, I have heard that you are able to replace the gearing in situ from 1.2 to 1.4.. but I can't remember where I heard it.

I recently swapped my 1:1 to a 1:2 (4bd1+R380).. I purchased an old RRC TC and had it rebuilt.. cost me about a grand inc fitting.

    Cheers.

OMFG - people pay far too much for T-cases!

I paid $350 for a late D1 Q-case recently (1.21:1 vs 1.22:1 for the old D1 case). Whacked in a McNamara 1-piece cross shaft conversion, and installed it with new seals.

Ranga - I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a good t-case. It is also likely you can find a defender owner who wants to swap for your 1.22:1 case.

That said - I think tweaking the engine could more than make up for the tall gearing.

undo front and rear prop shaft at unis
    undo hand brake cable
    undo hi/low range selector
couple of bolts hold the TC onto back of gbox

reassemble in reverse order replacing back of gearbox seal.

Someone that knows what their talking about will be around soon and tell you about the best ways to line things up, move the case etc.

I don't even know if it is essential that you drain the oil

I'd say that someone that knows what they are doing would do it in two to three hours, for a mug like me probably do it in a weekend.

Well Slug Burner pretty much summed it up.
Forgot to disconnect the speedo cable and a breather tube, and the hi-lo and cdl linkages can be a bit fernickaty.
When putting back together, make a few long guide rods to line it up.
    Easy peasy job.
Also, changing ratio is very straightforward, but IIRC, you must remember to swap speedo drive gear as well. They might be colour coded - green and blue, but I'm not 100% sure on that one, and which is which.
