88 RRC cruise control , aftermarket Job issues
On my Ebay speshul 88 RRC Hiline , it came with a Cruise control , a stalk type , the control module is inside a Purple box marked DANA Corp with a motherboard marked 57C01400 Rev E .The rest of it appears to be like any other standard CC of that era , with the vac chamber pulling the cable piggy backed to the accel cable.A Tailshaft magnet inductive pickup , another pulse pickup on No 1 spark plug lead and the standard brake light switching .
Can anybody help with some sort of Diagnostic / Troubleshooting guide for this model as it appears to have a mind of its own LOL ??The Control box/ECU also has Pots for "Low speed " and "centering" adjustments , although they dont appear to react to much .
Ps after dropping the lower dash for a sqiz , low and behold the local autosparky must have done his ususal job , ie , every thing wired in one colour , red , with the occasional black for fun !! if not most , but all of the original wiring loom seems to be there , albeit disconnected and scotch clipped together !!!

Can't help with that but a good place to start with aftermarket gear is making sure there are none of the Scotch Lock style of joiners anywhere, if so remove them and saolder the joints.
Some cruise units use 2 magnets on the shaft so might be wroth seeing if there is a "cleanish" spot where one might have gone missing. They are usually glued, and some also use a wire wrapped around the shaft to hold them in place.

Thanks mate , yeah checked that, the main issue seems to be around the units ability to pull the cable , or the centering on the cable , it just gives up all the time !!Vac signals all check out ok .
Ill rid it of those pesky scotch locks !!

Can't help you either, I had an early american made cruise control which went mad, so I shot it, ended fitting one of these:
CRUISE CONTROL AP60,UNIVERSAL DIY KIT NEW WITH WARRANTY - eBay Other Remote Controls, Remote Controls, Accessories, Electronics. (end time 14-Oct-10 17:48:38 AEDST)
New one has done a few years trouble free service now, not regretting it. Old one was analogue, new one is digital and much more stable.
Have fitted a few to other cars too, including a 300TDi. None have come back to haunt me.

Thanks bee -utey , we must have been down the same roads !! Ive got a spare CC in the shed . Its a AP40 or 30 . I fitted AP30 to my 200TDI back in 1993 and its still works perfectly ! I remember fiting a AP type CC to my 1978 RRC in 1980 and I think that may have been a Analogue type because it ran off the coil only with no Tailshaft speed sensor required . Taught the Kids to drive with that one , as you could slap it in Low range first and get them to steer it around the paddock while the missus shovelled horse pooh into the trailer behind LOL .Those old analogues had some smart algorythms built in to pick the rise and fall in RPM/load
So if cant get this thing to work , Ill dig up the old AP and fit that . !!!Thanks for reminding me
PS I saw the ebay add , and he shows the AP150 as well , that stalk thing is almost identical to the DANA thing I cant get to work ,how about that!!

The vac unit may have simply given up the ghost.
I know on some of the later cruise units there are diags you can do which flash error codes on a dash light, however if everything is in place im inclined to think that its either the cruise ECU or the vac unit is failing.
Few things; make sure all scotch locks are connecting properly or replace them if you feel inclined. Also make sure the cruise cable which connects to the accelerator has not stretched over time and having issues because it has to 'react' too much, you could try taking up any slack at idle position if there is any.
Also check the brake sense switch with a multi-meter to ensure its working correctly.

I have a command AP200? and have found that the most failure prone items are the solonoids in the vacuum motor.
In mine there are three solonoids which work on 5 volts. They can be checked by momentarily clicking them on 12 volts. If they click they are OK.
Good luck with finding parts, though you never know , the old Dana may share some parts with later units. Finding out is the issue.
