Clutch and flywheel dramas... with pics

Today has not been a good day.

We left home at 430 am for a few day trip to Fraser which we had been looking forward to for ages.

Got to Rainbow beach by about 830 am. Pulled into the centre to pick up permits and the clutch pedal felt slightly odd.

Assumed it was just my mind playing tricks, and went and collected the permits.

Got back to car, started it with the clutch down to a horrific squealing noise. Drove 200m and the clutch failed completely Pedal went rock hard, half way down.

    ****

I then spent the rest of the day in a RACQ truck (thankfully Ultracare is awesome)

Got the car delivered to a mates, Greg, (Grover69) and this is what we found. (Thanks to Greg and Teena, Grimace, and Dave(busman) who all spent a few hours on this tonight)

I am pretty sure the flywheel is also scrap.

I have just spoken to Rakeway who are getting me a shipping cost on a billet flywheel and AP clutch set up with billet machined thrust bearing

    Flywheel & Clutch Kits

Anyone got any input on the flywheel as it looks in the pics. Sorry they were the best ones we could get.

The cost of the Billet kits is pretty damn good compared to std replacement so I am 99% that is what i am doing, its just the timing that sucks!

I am also fairly confident I can pinpoint the exact 10m stretch of track that casued all this damage, and I am amazed that it has done the few trips since.

    Rgds

Its interesting, the second pic' you can still see the machined surface and what looks like rust. The collar looks like it has melted metal.
How is the pressure plate ? and would love to see the clutch plate.
When would be the best time for a clutch to go ? When someone rich is driving and offers to pay.

How did you get back from rainbow to gold coast? that sucks man... by the looks of it the fly wheel turning blue means its gone past the temperature that softens the metal (technical engineers input) and means that it's pretty much ****ed.... i'd got for the whole new kit if i were you

    Cheers,
    Shamo

A good time for it to fail would have been somewhere near home when I dont need the car!

    The clutch plate looks fine.

The cover is a bit suspect looking.

RACQ brought it and I back yesterday Shamo. A good investment!

The main concern I have with the flywheel is that being dual mass it has springs in it, and springs and heat is bad. I think I am not going to rush it and will wait for some shiny bits from Rakeway, rather than push my luck and reuse this flywheel, or put another standard one in.

It's not rust on the fly, there is alot of dust. But yes it has seen some high amounts of heat thats for sure

We will figure something out Pete! I am goin to be on Fraser come friday arvo no matter what!

Td5 Dual mass Flywheel were always a problem. Early Td5´s even had a service recall from Land Rover to change the flywheel under warranty conditions/claims.

Pete, you can also try the Britpart kit. Flywheel is supplied by Rakeway.

DA2357HD Britpart Super-Heavy Duty Clutch Kit for TD5
From this Kit I would use britpart flywheel but as for the clutch I still believe that the Original Land Rover (Valeo)is the way to go!

Bugger, You are the second person in a week that has had a BIG recovery with RACQ Ultra. The other one was a Sprite from Tasmainia to Brisbane!!! So yes I think a good investment...

We'll be camping at inskip Friday night, going across first barge Sat.

    See you there!
