    Long range fuel tank installation concerns

    Further to my previous post, I am having concerns about the installation of my second hand Long Ranger fuel tank. The tank is meant to fit a 92-99 Defender - I have a 1998 HCPU 300 TDI.

    I contacted Long Ranger and they told me I could use the fuel sender from existing original tank in the long range tank. The defender fuel pick up and sender are in one. Inside the long range tank, there is no "chamber" where this pick up sits.

    At the front of the tank (closest to the diff side) there is a pick up point with two 5/16" steel pipes coming up out of this chamber to half way up the tank on the outside. When the tank was delivered to me each of the 5/16 barbs had a short section of 5/16 fuel hose attached. One hose was blanked off and the other I assumed was attached to the fuel return.

    So I am a bit confused about the fuel pick up.

    Also, I am guessing I will have to remove the tow bar as well. I am worried how I will reattached the bar and get my hand up between the long range tank and the rear crossmember to do up the bolts.

    Any ideas here?

    As far as the towbar is concerned I stuck the nut into the spanner using a bit of blue tack and that worked well just a bit fiddly. I cannot help you with your other questions though.

    Andrew I'll take some photos of the Long Ranger on my '95 130 and post them here. The tray is off at the moment so it's easy to see.

    I can tell you that the original pickup in the sender is blanked off and the connections at the front of the tank are plumbed up, but I can't remember the exact configuration.

    .... and I agree with malsgoing130 on the towbar mounting method.

    I would be interested in the pictures.

    I pefer to blank off the hose inlet that is connected to the sender unit and use the correct pipe into the front of the tank.

    My only concern is pipe fittings and matching the existing pipe from the sediment filter with the correct fittings - don't want any leaks!

    Here they are. Ignore the mess; I haven't got to tidying this area up yet .

    The left side outlet on the front of the tank goes to the sedimenter. The right side fitting is used for the fuel return line:




    The original fuel pickup in the sender unit is blocked off:




    The tank fittings look to be 5/16" (I forgot to measure them) but because the original plastic-looking fuel lines are smaller the return line is pushed into a piece of 5/16" rubber hose (with no clamp mind you). I didn't drive this vehicle much before I pulled it apart, but there is no evidence of leaks. Still, I will probably work out a better system when I get to this bit of the restoration.

    A trick I use is to lightly tack a welding rod on to a nut & hold it in place that way & once it's done up, wiggle the rod until it breaks off. If you dont have a welder, then some glue would work.

    Thanks guys...

    I had to grind all the tow bar bolts off as the exposed threads were corroded and there was no way the nuts would undo. So I picked up new cad plated 8.8's with nylocs and will smoother them in coppercote grease before I put them back tonight.

    I will probably go the blutac method as I have done this before and I am using nylocs so heat will kill the nylon. I will even supa glue the flat washer to the back of the nut to save some effort.
