    Defender Electrics

I connected my defender's tacho meter the weekend and there are two wires which feed the illumination globe. (Red and Black) The globe was burning very faintly and when I tested the voltage it showed only 9V output on the red wire. Upon further investigation I saw there was an in-line resistor on the wire which I removed and now the bulb works fine.

What is the purpose of this resistor?

Further, does anyone know how the Ampere meter should be connected?

I suspect the resistor was there to drop the voltage to 9V to suit the bulb that was there.

Re the ammeter, wiring it will depend on the type of ammeter you have. Some use a shunt which measures a very small voltage drop across the shunt. I prefer this method as it means you only need to run light gauge wiring to/from the meter. Typically, the shunt should be matched to the meter and be rated for the maximum current drawn through it.

The other type of ammeter goes in series with the load and means that very heavy wiring must go to and from the meter.

Does the ammeter have any markings that you can google ? I'm not aware of defenders having an ammeter provided as standard equipment.

Can you remove thr bulb and check for voltage stamped on base. This will indicate what supply voltage shouild be. Jim
