Hi Murray,
IFAIK they're not anything special, but it's not legal to fit longer shackles.
See section 5 here,
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rd...340/0/VSI8.pdf
If the army ones are a LR part it would be interesting to know the legalities.

I'd like to fit longer shackles to the springs on my 2A Shorty. I know you can get the army type shackles, but I was wondering if I could make my own.
Can they be made from normal mild steel, or do shackles need to be hardened or heat treated etc ?? Any info would be appreciated.
Can someone tell me the dimensions of the army type shackles. How much longer are they ?
If anyone has some army shackles for sale, please let me know as that would obviously be the easiest option, but I'm still curious to know if I could make them.
Cheers, Murray

The army vehicles with the longer shackles have also lowered where the spring mounts at the other end.
Aaron.
As indicated
1. Army Series Landrovers also had the other spring mount lowered.
2. The combination is probably legal but the shackles alone definitely are not.
3. I do not believe there is anything special about the steel. Note that there is a spacer adding rigidity to the army shackles.
4. Army shackles are, I believe, available from Four Wheel Drives, and probably other suppliers as well.

The army shackles are ~2" longer IRC. The spring hangers are ~1.5" longer.
When I rebuilt my ex-military IIA, some of the shackle plates were worn, and I bought new ones for only a few dollars each. I am fairly sure the new ones were mild steel.
Although not legal, I have seen plenty of civvie landies (mostly shorties) running the longer shackles.
Thanks for the replies Guys.
I've just done a big clean up of the springs on the 2A. I really like my vehicles to sit level (it's just something that annoys me a bit) I might just have a play with the rear shackles. They shouldn't need to be too much longer. The front sits ok, so at least the steering geometry wont be affected if I don't change anything.
Cheers, Murray

Murray,
My first 4x4 was an FJ 40 Landcruiser back in 1988. I lengthened mine by about four inches. As the shacle and pin were one piece I cut the shackle in half and welded a peice of steel along the side. Although not legal you could get away with things back then.
My point here being there was nothing speciel about the steel as it took welding ok.

Yes I was thinking about it the other day. I was hoping you might have done it again this year. Do you remember Nigel with the black SVX? I was going past Bunnings in Mentone about three weeks ago and he pulled out in front of me. I followed him home and caught up with him.
Dave.
