    Bamford Winch Help!

A Bamford PTO winch has found it's way to Canada and I am about to buy it but can't get much info here on it. I own a 1982 SIII ex-mod but an 88" civi model. It is rhd. Being a civi will I have any problems mounting it? The winch is listed as a LHD model. My siii has a long block 2.25l. Please PM or email me at xrover@mac.com if you have some info, and installation instructions. Much appreciated.
    Tks

You might be better off posting in the technical section

That said, you shouldn't have any trouble mounting the winch on any series vehicle.

I suggest you put this on the Technical Forum and you might get some response - this one is mainly to alert people to good for good buys.

Have never seen the Bamford winch (although we do have a Bamford hay bailer) I think you will find the problem will not be with the position of the engine or exhaust pipe but with the position of your steering relay and levers.

In the RHD the drive shafts run down the LHS of the engine and transmission and under the the LHS of the radiator and front cross member. In a LHD vehicle this is where the steering relay in positioned. It is possible that your LHD winch has drive shafts which run down the other side of the engine/transmission and to the front where the steering relay is in the RHD.

I think this is why the Land Rover PTO winch was hydraulic so it didn't interfere with which ever side the steering was on.

You will need to sent pics to determine the problem.

Thanks. I will have the winch later this week and will see what I can do with it. I think I will be fine in that the Bamford was made for the Aussie marketplace, which is a rhd market, and my vehicle is rhd. I should be good to go.
    Thanks

Years ago there were people who got various winches which had the drive on the right rear where the steering relay is. What they did was to turn the winch (gearbox and drum) around so that the drive came out the front left, then using a short 1:1 chain drive to drop the drive down they brought the PTO drive shaft through under the winch. Then used the winch gearbox in the oposite mode - i.e "pay out" became "winch in".

Necessity is the mother of invention.

hey, i had one on my 74 s111 88' truck cab. fittted it myself.

i think they are all off 6cyl trucks so the rear driveshaft, the one from the pto to the 1st uni will need to be cut down and resplined. other than that it should bolt straight in. just check as the one witth the bearing mount wants to bolt to

you should have: 1 winch, 1 pto, 3 uni joints(not all the same), on one of the shafts is a bearing with mount that bolts on the inside of the left chassis rail(exsisting bolts/holes), and the selector dog and pull handle

oh plus about 200 feet of 12mm cable......

the pto is chain driven but also has a special clutch in it that when it reaches 6000lb toqure will ratchet slip.... this was ajusted in the factory.

i managed to track down the original maker of these and speak to him.
he sent me a instruction/insallation manual. he said DO NOT INCREASE THE LIMIT ON THE PTO....

i left it alone and never had the pto reach its limit. if you did you may just need to secure your truck get out and try and lesson the load

if you end up buying it pm me your address and i can photocopy the manual and mail it to you

    cheers, Serg

Thanks Serg, I have had 2 members send me a copy already so I am well off at this stage of game. And I did order it and am awaiting delivery. Interesting about the drive shaft as it does say it is for a SIIa and SIII which would not have had the 6cyl in them (unless Aussie got a special edition). As for the 6000#, I will use a snatch block but my SIII is pretty thined out and weight in at just under 3000#, so I should be fine.
    Thanks

I have a Bamford 6000lb in the garage, been ther since I pulled it off in the summer on the street in Brisbane.Grinder came in handy. Now to put it on my 1981 S3 109 Exarmy. If someone could send me those manuals for installation,I would be very thankful. With the Holden 202 in there,I needed diferent extractors so the shaft could go through. Thanks
