    diff reco

    hi

I have bought a second hand diff to put in the disco as the case hardening has come off in the oil in mine and I think 338,000km is probably long enough for a diff.

Before I fit the new one are there bearings that I should replace in the new one?

If so how hard a job is it?

    cheers

    Matt

Spin the pinion by hand, if it turns freely & doesn't feel notchy, the bearings will be fine IMO.

    Thanks

If it is Notchy, if it hard to do the bearings?

Any tricks or special tools required?

    thanks

If you have to replace the bearings then you will need a press and then a dial indicator to set the backlash and preload.
There are decent enough instructions on the RAVE CD to set up a diff - it would help to do some reading on the net too.

    good luck.

So you are swapping one complete diff centre for another?

Just check that everything turns freely, that the pinion backlash and preload are in spec, and call it good.

Matt, diffs aren't consumable parts that have a certain "lifespan". If regularly maintained they will outlast most everything in the vehicle.
Mine has done 390,000km with no signs of wear, a friend of mine has 450,000+km on original gear, and there was a chap a while back who posted from Broken Hill with 840,000km on his D1 with original running gear. He stated the head had never been off too...
Things wear out by abuse, lack of maintenance or contamination

    Thanks guys for the reply

This is my point of concern. "Regularly maintained" I bought the Car at 325,000 km and when I changed the diff fluid it came out silver. I think there was more metal then oil.

I am about to give the truck a 2 inch lift as am getting off road more and more and I don't want to be towed out by my mate in his Paj.

This is the one I have bought so I am going to have to take it apart anyway to fit the replacement spider gear.

So you bought another with the same problem???

IMHO - You probably would have been better off buying a true trac LSD. You would have had a much stronger centre AND an LSD for not much more $$$.

The "good" centre in that bucket of bits has no bearings. So you will need either need to buy bearings and set the new diff up from scratch, or swap the side and spider gears between the two diffs - if doing that you may as well just swap internals into your existing diff. Make sure you carefully check the free play of the cross shaft. They are the weak point of the rover hand grenade.

If your diff and one of the two diffs has the case hardening flaking off - what's to say it won't happen to the one "good" diff out of the 3?

    US suppliers - e.g. rovertracks.

Measure end float and axial play.
