    Smile 1998 Disco 330000km

    Hello,

My disco (1998 TD5 auto) is approaching 330,000km, I love it and want to keep it alive for as long as possible. I normally get it serviced every 5000km (oil change, filter etc as it costs me $120). Its got a few leaks here and there but my mechanic doesn't think I should worry and I trust his advise - and the vehicle drives pretty well.

Firstly, should I be sticking with that service interval or take it in when I think it needs servicing because of the kms its done and how I use it...I'm thinking it needs servicing now, only done 4,000kms since the last service.

Secondly, I bought it at 270,000km with no service history. I haven't had the timing belt done since (its a metal belt). Should I be getting it changed when nothing sounds bad and it drives well. Anything else I should look at raising with the mechanic that should be looked at for a vehicle with so may kms?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    Timming chain

I have a similar query regarding the timing chain on my Td5.
So far i have heard very little talk about them.
Most other makes of vehicle have a set replacement milage for the timing chain. I would have thought it is working pretty hard on a Td5.

4000k servicing seems a tad excessive though.

First up Welcome to the Forum, now, only you know how you drive your LR, if you feel it needs an oil change after only 4K then go ahead. IMHO with the quality of oils and filters nowdays I would stick to 5K+ service intervals, but if it hasn't done any hard work,i.e. constant Freeway or lots of Low range stuff, I would go the 6 months change interval. As you don't state where you are from (city or bush) it is hard to give advice. I run Fully Synthetic oil, change the filter at 5K (top up) and change the oil at 10K, but that's me, you will probably get others saying "NO, change oil at 5K" and that's OK too.
The Timing Belt is NOT "Metal", it is a Rubber toothed belt and some say it should be changed at 60K, others say 80K, I recently changed mine and in 60K I will change it again. If you buy the timing belt kit you will get a Flanged crank pulley and tensioner pulley which is an upgrade, yours may already have the upgraded pulleys, but for the cost it's a good idea to change the "Bearinged" pulleys anyway, not a hard job with plenty of tutorials in the Good Oil forum in this Forum, Regards Frank.

Umm - the OP says he has a TD5 = chain.

Which should last the life of the engine.

However - 1998 should still be a 300Tdi - to which I think you are referring. The OP should clarify if he has a TD5 or TDi.

I have never seen a service manual which specifies replacement intervals for a timing chain. Belt yes. I have never heard of timing chain failures on TD5s.

I agree that 4000 km services are ridiculously excessive. The TD5 has an excellent bypass filter system which should keep the engine oil very clean.

Wasn't the D2 TD5 built in the UK from summer 1998 (ramp up to launch in Sept/Oct 1998)?

Couldn't say when the first models arrived in Oz, or when the first Oz spec models were built, someone else will know that I'm sure.

I'm sure you are right. 1998 was the first release of the Td5 Disco in the UK and 1999 for us.

If it is a '98 then it is likely to be a 300Tdi with a timing belt.

    td5 servicing

G'day, myname, I have a 1999 td5 d2 with 324000 km;s, bought it off a pedantic englishman who changed the oil every 5,000 km;s. Mine has a timing chain, shouldn't have to touch it. However, I did replace all the oils[ engine, diff, etc.] did replace the old carden shaft with the new greasable version, did replace the injector harness with the modified version [ the old oil in the harness at the ECU.trick] did have issues with cooling water leaks, fitted an engine saver low water alarm, do have the old oil leak at the transfer case seal happening, when it stops I'll know it's time to top up, but have to admit I wouldn't have it any other way. One thing I can say , if you have any questions, ask the people on this website -- they are only too willing to go out of their way to help. Had a chat to the local LR mob at Redcliffe, they say with the new synthetic oils only have to change at 6 mnths or 10,000 km's, but it's what you feel comfortable with. Cheers, Bob10

Hi mate, what sort of driving are you doing? Long runs or lots of short runs?

My engine is new, i cooked the last one. But around town it was burning oil after about 3000km because the short runs soot the oil up quicker.

I have since started using Caltex Dello 400 oil and finding it much better, was using Valvoline Super diesel. The valvoline was a good oil when i was doing 20km or so to work but now i live and work in the same town so not doing the long runs.

I'd stick with the 5000km service intervals if you are doing the longer drives more often as opposed to all your km's being mostly short city type trips. If you are doing the shorter trips maybe service at 3000km or 6 months. matt

EDIT: if you dont know when the timing belt was last done, then do it.

There I go, not reading the post properly, I wrongly assumed it was a 300TDi cause the last post I looked at was about a 300TDi, I apologise for the gaff, Regards Frank.
