Inner guards??? Try fitting an earth directly to the engine off one of the batts, it should then go OK. The big issue with early vehicles is poor earthing due to corrosion etc.

I have a 77 model RRC that needs two batteries to start, but all the accessories are 12 volt.
Why does it need two batteries?
My first thought was that in 77 the batteries were of small cca rating so have installed a 700cca battery and it still won't start.
My knowledge of electrics is limited but the two positive terminals are connected together and the two earths are connected to the inner guards. I think this just doubles the amperage but leaves it as 12v, is this correct?
If it is why won't it start on one large battery?

Sounds like my 2 door was before I chucked out the Lucas starter. Either dismantle your starter and lube the bushes or chuck it and get a later D1 Bosch starter from a wreckers. One 700cca battery should spin it up very well.
Also run a new heavy duty earth cable from the battery negative to the engine block.

It hasn't had a diesel transplanted by any chance?
People have told us less.LOL

I had a good look at the battery cables. The earth on the drivers side (main battery) went to the inner guard. The passenger side went to the inner guard then had another cable that went to the screw top bolt on the rocker cover.
So I undid the drivers side earth and connected it to the rocker cover the same as the other side.
And she works....a 600cca battery spins it up nicely. Just have to get some more fuel to see if it will start.
Thanks heaps mate.
I am coming down your way in a couple of weeks (not in a land rover) just to have my first look around tassie.
I was hoping to not spend much on this truck as I am gutting it soon to put a 4BD1 in it, thanks anyway.
No diesel, YET! Hopefully over winter next year it will get one.
Thanks guys

I have both batteries on the RRC +ve connected to my starter and a 4 point earth on each battery running from the -ve to body to block to chassis.
Although not always required, running an earth strap from the chassis to one of the starter mount bolts works well too if you suffer from the usual earth problems. There is an earth at the back of the head to the firewall, check this as its common age related issue and can mess with the ignition also.
Cheers

neale,
The rocker cover screw is WAY too insignificant, and may actually arc and damage the thread etc in the head. Bolt it to one of many places available on the block, below the heads, or on the front of the head. In an early RRC there are plenty to choose from.
