    Thermal fan with Holden 186 conversion

    I have a thermal fan set up for a 186 conversion (as you do) and it has a weird thermostat device with a turn knob (presumably to adjust the point at which it cuts in) and the thermal pickup is fitted in where the radiator hose attaches to the radiator via a thin and very flimsy looking metal wire. Not the most reliable looking system and while currently working, I'm sure there is a better way.

    So is there a simple mod where I can fit a thermal fan on/off switch into the engine block water jacket somewhere, and is this an effective mod? I have read that such conversions often pick up the head temp and not the water temp. Is there an "ideal" temperature range at which it should turn the fan on and off to suit the application? Given that the original fans were constantly on when attached with the fan belt does it matter how much it runs?

    You've got an adjustable temp switch. Reliable if you avoid damaging the capillary tube. Have the same on my POS to switch on the second fan when the temp gets to half on the gauge.

    Another option is something like this:

    X-eng High Performance Off-Road Engineering

    They are available cheaper than that apparently. You can get all sorts of Tridon temp range switches to fit but they are not adjustable.

    Another possibility is a temp controller from Auber Instruments, such as this one:

    UNIVERSAL PID TEMPERATURE CONTROL CONTROLLER (eBay item 110557193685 end time 06-Dec-10 15:54:03 AEDST) : Business Industrial

    They have VDO sender equivalent sensors too, look at their website. The controller gives you a real time temp readout and is programmable to switch fans on/off as required. Cheap at the moment too.

    I just had mine on a manual switch.

    low range = turn it on
    hwy = turn it off
    city heavy traffic = turn it on
    city normal = turn it off
    city normal with a strong tail wind = turn it on

    worked for me. no real need to overcomplicate things on a series with a 186
