old Rangie V8 Tapping Noise Gone ?

    Hello All ,
Had loud tapping from the beast 73 Rangie and was getting on my tits , bought a motor from another Aulroian with intent to bung in , tinker , look at drinking beer and next thing I swapped the whole rockers and push rods from the same side that was rattling and the noise is gone . I didn't change the lifters (and havent driven anywhere ) but she seems much much quieter !
This is good , I got even more technical and performed a compression test and as usual didnt read the instructions (i didn't floor the accelarator) and got readings on the side I'm working on ( LH) 1 = 110 , 2 = 110 , 3 = 10 and 4 = 110 . Sorry if I'm coming across as a complete novice but I am . I did a wet test on said cylinder and the same reading occured . My question/s is , is it my camshaft causing this . The engine in her doesn't blow smoke (although there was a lot of smoke today after the wet test but its gone now )and doesn't lose coolant ! Sorry for the long post and 1000 apologies if im asking a dumb arse question ?
    Thanks Garfy

If you got 10 psi on 3 you would check you put both pushrods back properly on this cylinder. With the rocker cover off crank/turn by spanner the engine and look to see both rocker arms are moving properly. Then aim the dissy rotor to the lead for that cylinder, remove the spark plug and blow into the plug hole using a piece of heater hose. If your breath goes straight through the cylinder it's stuffed. You can hear/see blowby at the inlet valve, exhaust or rocker cover. If your breath bounces back at you its likely a rocker arm or pushrod. The cam may be worn by there's usually enough lobe to give a little lift.

    Sounds like a burt valve
As said try some air in the cylinder and see where/if it leaks.
    Cheers, Kyle

Yes tried blowing air into the cylinder with rotor arm in the right position and (i asked my wife but she didn't want to stick her ear in the exhaust pipe so she continued the vacuuming ) taped a bag over the end , when I applied pressure and checked the bag it was under pressure . Is this my exhaust valve and not my piston ?
    Thanks Boys

    Your describing a Burnt valve

OK .... final check .... Now undo the bolts hanging onto the exhaust manifold and do the "blowing air into the cylinder" again ... This will now blow the air out the head in front of you

Sounds like exhaust valve. A complete second hand head off someone here might be the cheapest fix. But if it runs OK it MIGHT have been a load of carbon break off and unseat the valve. Give it a run and see if the compression comes up.
