Possibly a sticky/gunked up stepper motor (idle air intake valve)?
g'day to v8 experts these landrovers sure are strange vehicles, recently i was banging on about oil leaks, but now i claim to have a completely leak free landrover ,so why am i whinging now? recently went to melb by air leaving landrover in garage ,before this it was running perfectly,on start up motor went to about 1500 revs maybe a tad less and after about 3 sec went to a smooth idle .now 3 weeks later on startup it revs it head off at about 1800 plus and takes longer to come to idle ,very annoying.
now the only thing i did before leaving for melb was disconnect battery, negative terminal only, now you may argue pros and cons of this but i have always disconnected the batteries of vehicles if left for some time ,can anybody explain this quirky behaviour .......maroochy

Ditto to samD
The IAC is supposed to cycle fully on start up. I suggest that it has got a bit sticky from disuse and needs to be cleaned.
The centrifugal advance may also be sticking at advance, so remove the rotor (carefully) and drop some oil down the shaft.

thanks to sam d and phillip for the suggestions ,first job tomorrow
i will be careful with the rotor!!!!!.........regards maroochy
all good followed advice from from sam d and phillip a , also sprayed some ''jaycar contact cleaner'' on pins of stepper motor and also on pins of maf plug, and lo and behold she's now back to normal, so what did the trick i have no idea.by the way can you take apart that damned stepper motor, there's not much you can do with it otherwise. i did notice when i removed the rotor the shaft would move up and down, yes i held the shaft down while i removed the rotor ,anyway it looks like something or somebody has messed with it previously, anyway have ordered kit of parts ti fix it, so that will be interesting.
in case members think i know absolutely nothing about rover v8's (they would be correct) in my defence ,this is the first petrol engine car i have owned for about 25 years, so iac"s,maf's ecu's are a complete mystery, anyway thanks to the good folk here i will soldier on ,thanks ......maroochy
