I was speaking to a Land Rover mech about this situation only the other day ... we both shook our heads. He went on to name quite a few other horrible little things found on late model LR's which can only garner a response akin to disgust.
Simon.
This is NOT what i wanted to ever see. A D2a (2003)with PLASTIC HEAD DOWELS!
Took the head off at 102K to fit replacement due to fuel rail crack, and found plastic locating dowels, when all the others I have seen from 2002 on have had steel ones.
Looks like another 'time bomb' like the ' not sure what vin range' oil pump bolt saga.
I guess we just shouldn't get any of our Td5's hot, at ANY time then.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

Simon,
I have come to accept the shortcomings of the early Td5 with plastic locating dowels, as they should've known better, but to find some on a model I have been recommending people to buy because they supposedly DON"T have this issue is very disheartening

Justin,
Absolutely ... I think the reason this slips through generally is because 90% of the people who do the work on the vehicles are the mechanics and not home serviced by the DIY types. I'm sure the mechanics who work on the vehicles must all shake their heads with disgust when they see this stuff ... it may be where some of the low opinion comes from.
We were in the market for a new LR just recently ( As you may be aware ) and after doing research on late model LR's, I came to the conclusion it was all too much trouble. I wanted a simple, bullet proof vehicle ... which is why I bought the County 110. I don't think it helps that LR have passed through the hands of several companies in recent years ... but when you are paying such a price tag for these vehicles and you make those kinds of discoveries ... not good.

Thanks for the heads up JC just another reason why I keep fixing my old girl and not selling her
On a similar note, I bought a TD5 head gasket set last year and YES, it came with plastic dowels. I bought the steel dowels separately
Erich
well that just put a spanner in the works of my reserching which defender to buy!!!!!, is it an easy replacment Erich, and what is the cost for a set of steel ones???
It's about $5 from LR for the steel ones.
Justin, theres no way it could have had head work earlier? It was definetely as it left the factory?
Rgds
Pete
Errr but who in their right mind would replace the steel component with a plastic one?
