Can you face a Td5 head???

Yup, the head is off the Fender... It lost water and got a little warm, then once refilled it presurised the system when under load. Decision made.. Remove the head. Once removed, signs the head gasket had slipped down 5 mm (plastic dowels were powder and gasket touchin valves on no 5. Only damage is gasket ridges on head face. So, can you skim/face a Td5 head? Land Rover and a few others say no, some say yes.. I've taken the chance and it's being done as we speak but will it work? Thoughts please!

Yes, 8 to 10 thou MAX, as you will approach the depth of the hardfacing.

As little as possible should be removed.

JC, does that also apply to a 300TDi head as well, my head had a 7thou. dip so I had 8 thou. removed and the valves recessed as well, would the valve recessing also apply to the TD5, Regards Frank.

    Hi Frank,

The Tdi isn't such a problem at 8Thou, as you know you can adjust the clearances manually, and the valves will be still far enough away from piston etc to avoid contact. If you were to recess the seats, then the tappet adjustment after assembly etc will be all that is req.

The Td5 however has hydraulic lash adjusters, valve stem length is critical. the closeness to the pistons at 8thou on a Td5 is no problem, the stems need to be ground the same amount as taken off the valve seats if the seats are recessed, to retain correct operation of the lash adjusters.

    10thou is fine .

    TD5 Head

The answer from LR is no but....

As with most LR products there are a number of Head Gaskets with varying thicknesses! I took 9 thou off my 1999 td5 at 120, 000 km and fitted the thickest head gasket. To date I have accumulated and extra 220,000 km (total of 340+) and its still going strong.

Have the head checked for straightness first, and then if it needs it what have you got to lose - a head you cannot use???

Edit - Head Gasket thicknesses as follows:

    one hole - 1.20 mm - LVB000240
    two hole - 1.27 mm - LVB000250
    three hole - 1.35 mm - LVB000260

    Regards,

    Toad.

I had my TD5 head skimed.
They also reset the valve to face hight(so the valves wouldn't protrude more the std.).

The different gasgets allow for different piston protrusion above the block.
I just went the thickest to be safe.
    Cheers, Kyle
