    Alternator whistles on load..?

    Hi folks,
The relatively new Denso 65A alternator (12 months ago from G Coopers) on my 90RRC is whistling under load. ie when the aircons on full (18amp draw) or any other "heavy" ancillary. It's charging correctly at 14.2V. Battery is a newish Optima Yellow top in great condition. Belt tension is correct.

Alternator on it's way out?? - the trucks got a lot of work to do in the middle of nowhere next month (Gosford!) so should get it sorted prior....

    ta
    Chris

Alternators whine under load, that is normal. If it has a harsh stuffed bearing noise that probably means a stuffed bearing. If it measures up fine in the volts department under load then it is all OK. A doide fault will alter the whine sound and also appear as a low voltage under load. Also then the indicator light usually glows on the dash.

I once fitted a brand new Bosch 120 amp alternator to a mate's car, it was a whiner too, didn't affect its output though. Must be the geometry of the windings that does it. Probably car alternators get designed to be quiet, the 120 amper was designated "agricultural" or something.
