That doesn't look all that bad, when the nut is tightened up it'll slide up the spline a bit more. To help, use some never sieze on the splines.

Hi All,
I've run into trouble trying to fit a new drop arm to a reconditioned steering box in my County. The drop arm will not slide all the way on to the splines, leaving a big gap at the top. I've taken a photo (see below) and this is as far as I can get it to go on.
I can't find any obvious problem with the splines on the box or in the drop arm. There was a little rough patch but I filed it smooth. I've also checked to make sure that the nut screws all the way on to the threads - it does.
Can anyone confirm that the arm needs to slide further onto the splines? Also, any ideas as to what is wrong (assuming it does need to go further)?
Cheers,
Dave.

Thanks Justin, but that is as far as I could get it with the bolt. I took it off for the photo. The first time I tried to fit it I used anti-seize and got no further. There is a good 5-6mm of spline left untouched inside the drop arm before you get to the steering box shaft.
Usually there is a bit of a gap left under the washer/ nut. I wouldn't worry but make sure you swing off the nut with a long bar/ pipe. If they come loose they will flog out the arm and splines on the sector shaft. Looks OK to me
