    TD5 Oil Cooler Matrix

    G'day all,

I havn't posted on here for a while but my TD5 is in dire need of an overhaul as it is in a fairly sad state of repair after much use and abuse, I am also doing some preventative maintenance whilst the engine is out and in pieces.

My oil cooler is OK but there is a bit of discolouration on the matrix with a bit of pitting as well, I know these have a history of failing from time to time and am looking into replacing it whist the engine is apart. A new oil cooler assembly is not cheap and it seems a bit of a waste to replace the whole assembly when only the matrix is corroded, does anyone know of a replacement matrix or do you need to replace the assembly in its entirety.

I have searched through a lot of old posts and can find no such info, and was hoping some one might have come up with a new solution.

Any ideas or info will be greatly accepted.

I have heard of success by coating the inside of the cooler housing with ceramic material to stop corrosion completely on the housing. Not a good idea with the matrix as it will retain the heat but would solve the housing failure.
Think it was for some industrial engine but no reason it couldnt be done in a normal car sized engine.

    Cheers

Corrosion on the housing is not the problem, it will only leak coolant if it goes. Its the matrix you have to worry about, if that leaks, the oil will leak into the cooling system...and if it is real bad and you don't notice the oil pressure light...good bye engine!!!

I have the same problem with mine, didn't want to spend the cash at the time on a new one as I don't use my car that much, so did a quick fix on it, but now it is leaking again. I think I'm going to take the matrix out and take it to a radiator shop and get a new one made up. I think George130 on here did this successfully.

Get a second hand cooler from a P38 Range Rover. Find an aluminium welder to take the spigots off the original, and weld them onto the P38 cooler....get it flushed at a radiator place. SHould cost you about $200 +50+75

Now you have a bigger, better cooler for about half the price of a new original.

Hamish, Will this fit into the Housing on the block, or are you talking about fitting it externally?
    regards, dave.

The gearbox cooler gets confused a lot with the engine cooler, there is no way a p38 cooler will fit in the engine cooler housing. Besides, the gearbox oil gets air cooled, whereas the engine oil is cooled by the coolant.

Thanks all, yep the P38 cooler wont fit as this is the internal engine oil cooler.

Its a stupid set up having to replace the whole block when the matrix is retained by 2 bolts.

I will give it a good clean up and see how it looks afterwards, but chances are it seems like I will have to spend the 250 quid and get one sent out of the UK to Dubai.

    Thanks again for the info.

Karcraft have them at a reasonable price (PBC500230)
and i wouldn't bother mucking around with it for their price. think about it, how old is the average TD5 now, near 10 years isn't too bad really, if you do it right now and replace with new, you probly won't ever have to look at the cooler again in your life with that car, unless of course you like hanging onto old cars that are 20 odd years old.
