Pulled the regulator out of the Denso alternator this arvo. The back of the regulator is filled with a soft rubber like compound and it had split in may areas and it had dirty water stains around and in these cracks that went deep into the regulator. Hmmm I do recall entering some rather deep holes in the wombat forest sunday too. So I found an old Marelli off a disco that had the brushes and slip rings chewed out by a destroyed rear bearing. Both regs looked remarkably similar, only the brushes are replaceable on the Marelli but not on the denso. So I hacked out the brushes my Denso and put them in the Marelli regulator to see if that was the problem, put the Marelli regulator in the Denso alternator (all bolt and fittings matched up)and fired the disco up. The volts went immediately from 12.3 to 14.2. Yippeeeee. So now all I will do is buy a new Regulator, think I will go for the Marelli regulator the Denso one has no heatsink, that crappy filling behind the regulator and no possibillty of replacing brushes without destroying it.
I feel like going back to those 2 so called Auto Elecs and telling them what I now think of their expert diagnosis.
Also as advised by all the above previous posts. YOU DEFINATELY CAN AND SHOULD WINCH WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING!!
Thankyou Drivesafe and Justin, I as well as others value your experienced input.

I may go that way in the future if the value is in it for a conversion.

There is a definate advantage in 'having a go' sometimes, this sort of thing is what keeps vehicles going enough to get home in remote ares etc. That is also a reason to keep some of your old gear...just not too much or the misses will freak out when it starts being stored in kitchen cupboards
