    Rekitting 3.5V8 Solex 175CD Carbs

My Solex 175CD carbs are still working OK but are getting tired and could do with a re kit. My engine has run mostly of LPG for the last 20 years so there is a chance that the main needle and seat is warn due to a lack of lubrication (I do not have the suckers to lift the pistons up when on gas.

In the kits I have seen listed for sale online - I do not see the main needle and seat included (float needle and seat yes).

So has anyone kitted their carbies lately and did you get the main needle etc? If did replace them where did you get them from?

    Cheers

The needles and jets are not supplied with kits, there are a lot of profiles available, that is the reason why. If you remove a needle from its holder you will see some letters and numbers stamped on it, If you were going to buy needles for SU's, you'd try Midel in Sydney, but I'm not sure if they also do Solex CD bits or not.
If you are running these carbs on a 3.9 for example, you can play with needle profiles to gain correct enrichment.

Garry, have you considered swapping to HIF SU's? Like on P6B 3500's etc? They are way better carbs, and LPG won't effect them so much as they have no rubber diaphragm etc. Lots of performance needles etc available too. I have removed the CD175's,fitted a set and 'tuned' them to a RRC and found a huge performance gain when playing with needle profiles, allowing more ign advance and actually improving fuel economy.

I wish I'd known that when I had my 3500 One Ten Pickup. Those Solex's gave me headaches. That and the aging mechanical advance on the dizzy, and the wear on the cam and lifters.

    Hi JC,

Yes I had thought of it - in fact the earlier 3.5s in the 101 were SUs. However I still have a few thing to do on my truck so this would be a low priority - something to do when I am bored some day.

At this stage I just want to get what I have running well - I have been able to improve petrol MPG from 10 to just under 15 so giving my current carbs the once over should make things a little better.

    Cheers

    Good news those 4mpg!

People do try and improve the fuel economy with these by leaning them out/ lifting jets etc, but they really do respond well to more advance and slightly richer fuel settings / needle profiles IME. Especially a High comp 3.5 in a 4spd RRC. These would easily get 20+MPG, I new of one that would routinely get 25MPG on a long run.

Much as I like EFI, those figures are a dream for one of those

I have to be honest about the 4 mpg - it was spark related rather than carbie related. My original 101 coil died and I replaced it with a Bosch GT40 - the increase is instantaneous - went to 15mpg from a consistent 10mpg - overall about 14mpg but on petrol only - LPG stayed at 10mpg so the better spark did not change LPG mpg. I don't know what the ignition timing was but I have it on about 8 BTDC and works fine on both fuels and I cannot detect any difference in power between the two fuels.
