I got my Defender stuck in bonnet high water and drivingn back the temp is slightly higher than it used to be.
How do I test to determine whether my Viscous is working properly?
I just had an idea after reading this thread.
If you get a heat gun or hairdryer and take off the shroud and train it on the spring on the centre of the viscous, you should be able to feel the difference in stiffness.

Does aybody know temp the viscous starts to engage on the 3.9l engines?
The engagement depends on the temp of the air passing through the radiator onto the spring not the engine temp.
Mine will start to roar with the temp gauge at normal but doing hot work like sand , so my assumption is that the air temp has to be well under 105C.
Mine was roaring even at 110Kmh towing on flat ground with outside temp of 46C, so my guess is about 90-100C.
