Can 12V HID lights run on 12V AC power or DC only

Not very Land Rover, but sort of related, but figure someone might help anyway

Can 12V HID lamps run off 12V AC power or must they be converted to 12V DC.
Looking at converting some lights for shaft inspection purposes and need to buy 240-12 transformer to power as they need to run for 12 hours.

    Thanks

    Clive

Fix the AC by buying a bridge rectifier which will cost a few bucks. Or buy a regulated DC power supply. The HID inverters only run on DC. Personally I would not run HID as they get very hot without ventilation. Try the new LED lights instead. The internet is full of high wattage LED chips and lamps that are much safer down a hole as there are no high voltages involved, and little heat. Even AULRO had these great LED work lights as a special group buy a month or so ago which are rated at 24 watts. Brilliant.
