Could be an ignition barrel/circuit problem, the engine stop doesn't activate because the key hasn't turned but all the gauges etc do-so might be a failing switch contact.
If your brake lights/reversing lights/stereo that is activated at the same key position as the gauges don't work as well I would start looking there.

Mind did the same thing when we were away at Mamar park at Easter time, kept blowing the 3rd fuse, the battery fuse I think its only a 5amp fuse and kept blowing, ended up with a 15 amp fuse to get home, when home found the fuel filter warning light plug at the filter were shorting out, unpluged it and haven't blown since, but that fuse makes all the dash and speedo die when blown as well the indercators...

    Hope this helps

The other half has had this happen on his. He's saying it was the Meter fuse in the fuse box above the gear box that had blown. "The reason behind it was a chaffed wire in the back of the speedo cluster". He said that in the fuse box two of them had no description, the meter fuse is one of those, the other is alarm related.

    Not sure if that helps

do em all. pull each fuse and do continuity on it and then have a go at the fuse holder with a bit of fine wet and dry thats on a stiff backing.
