    Lt230 transfer. Which bearing ??

My 300Tdi 130 Defender suddenly developed a noise the other day when I backed off the accelerator going down hill, not off road, just a normal hill on the road. I immediately thought it was a uni joint letting go because the clatter was at that frequency and it was deffinately something in the driveline, but all the uni's seemed fine when I got under and had a look.
I enguaged low range just for interest and the frequency of the clatter doubled, so I'm guessing it's probably a bearing in the transfer box, does this sound like a reasonable assumption ?? I haven't had much to do with Lt230's, so before I drop it out can someone tell me if they're known for a particular bearing failure, and can it be a case of replacing one bearing, or is it more likely an indication of overall wear of the transfer box.

    Cheers, Murray

Do the easiest checks first. if it has a salisbury rear diff check that the pinion nut hasn't come loose by trying to rock the back of the prop shaft up and down, in and out. After that drop the bottom plate on t/case and hand brake off, neutral in both gearbox and transfer, wheels chocked, with large screwdriver or tyre lever check end float of input gear, intermediate gear and out put gear centre diff assembly. Intermediate gear endfloat/preload can be reset by tightening the big nut at back of inter shaft. The other gears are a little more difficult to adjust as they require thicker shims behind bearing cups.
