Inspect all your belt pullies Ian.
Only time I've seen these belts break is when the bearings in the pullies seize.
Done once in my TD5 and 1/2 a dozen times in trucks.

The water pump is driven off the back of the power sterring pump also.
You won't know till you start her up about the head gasget.
How long did it run while hot?
If you got on to it quickly you "should" be right but get it checked to be sure.
    Cheers, Kyle

If you didn't loose all your water you should be OK.

Ian, if it runs OK after you have got it going again, still closely monitor coolant level and whether it overpressurises the cooling system for a time, as it could end up with a head gasket issue later. No doubt those plastic dowels got pretty soft...
    Hope its OK.

my money says that so long as the low coolant alarm didnt go off and the needle didnt peg out of the red zone just jumped up there then you are ok.

because its a computer stabalised temp gauge it will stay in the one position providing the engine is within its normal operating temperature and not move.

once you go 1 degree over that threshold it will jump the needle to just under the red section of the temperature gauge. You haven't actually overheated just yet but you are getting very close to it. Once the needle moves into the red you are officially overheated but so long as you get it shut down/cooling down and you haven't lost the coolant you should still be OK. If the needle went to the end of the red and beyond its time to be concerned.

I would be thinking about doing the head gasket and the dowels as a precautionary measure but I strongly doubt that the head itself has been damaged. I know of td5's that have been past 125 deg C without problems after.

primary precautions would be to now replace the expansion tank cap and source a second expansion tank as a standby for when/if you redo the head gasket.

one of the very cool things about the cooling system of the TD5 is that it will convection cycle while on flat ground (or even slightly nose uphill) with the engine shut down so long as its got coolant its got a fighting chance.
