I'd like to replace my standard steering wheel with a LARGER one, to make driving my Rangie more, em, 'Civilised'.
There's no suggestion that the system is not working as it should, though I'm not impressed with it to be honest. - I've had too many Jap vehicles!
My theory is that the steering wheel has been shrunk to appease the stylists, at the expense of human ergonomics. To give an example...
All the coaches I drive have Very Large diameter wheels, perfect for precise control, whereas the Rangie needs LOTS more effort, - and to move it only a tiny amount for similar 'fine' control.
This means the choice between constant alternating tensions, or let the car wander before correcting. I'm describing the effort as measured at the wheel rim, and yes, on the bus the same effective diameter is still *way* less..
As a quick and cheap fix, I was thinking of replacing it with one from a previous year, around '92, which will give me around one inch greater diameter... A small but welcome improvement, and still keeping the 'On Wheel' cruise control buttons. (If I ever get it working)
My only concern is whether the splines / mounting shaft is the same.

My point exactly, - so why did they put a tiny, Lotus-size steering wheel on it ?
My little bus weighs in at 16 tonnes unloaded, and is 20+years old.
- So was my '83 Crown and 1.5 T, with light(er) precise and pleasant steering.
I'm just saying to blazes with 'Designer Aesthetics' - and want a wheel thats nicer to handle. (as well as seeing ALL of my dashboard worry-lights)

It's just that there was never a 1994MY sold here as we jumped from the 1993 (KA) to the 1995 (MA) Model Years.
If you have a KA, then the 1992 MY (JA) steering wheel is exactly the same size. If you have a tiny, Lotus sized wheel on it now, then are you sure it's the original?
If you have an MA, then you have the problem of the SRS airbag in the steering wheel. Chances are the splines are different too.

Yes, I'm in Oz.. the other side, - though Canberra treats us a bit like a foreign land...
Mine is a (SALLHAMM) MA65****, "Built July 94" according to the compliance plate. First registered November 1994.
Though the wheel is the original one, I reckon 15" (38cm) is a shade too small for comfort/control. Another inch would make it better, and 1 1/2" would be better still.
My old Passat had the lightest feel of all with 16 or 17" and NO power boost !
From what you say Scouse,, there's a good chance the splines are gunna be diFferANt, so I'm up that creek.
Ah well, nothing ventured - nothing gained...

Something is amidst here. These this drive heaps better than any japper for a live axle. You my have caster issues or worn suspension/steering components. The Rovers don't under steer like most jap cars hence a more direct feel to the road. My rangie runs a smaller than stock wheel and is dot on.

I had a 94 Vogue and it was an LSE so even heavier - steering waas not heavy ata ll.
Mat eyou have problems elsewhere, not the diameter of the wheel.

There's no problem with the handling... eg, going quickly around round-a-bouts and I reach *my* limit long before the car does! So I'm pretty confident that nothing is too badly worn or out of adjustment beyond salvage!
You've given me some food for thought, so I'll hold off till we eliminate some of the "possibles", Mike 90 is champing at the bit to have a close look at the Cruise Control AND the bothersome steering.!
Be assured everybody... the ghost of Joseph Lucas is still out and about... now my ignition lock is playing up.
Incidently, its only done 148,000 or so Km, the first half over many years as a Rich Man's toy, properly seviced.
-The latter half over 5 or so years as a family runabout. On beaches... Serviced by Dodgy Derrick or other non-believers.
