D2 Front End "Noise" When Braking/Steering

I fear there is something loose, or worn in my front end.

When trail braking and turning right, (imagine approaching a 90 deg right hand turn in a suburban street at say 40ks, braking as you approach, and turning into the street) I get a single knock noise from the front end as the load transfers to the left hand side of the vehicle. It doesnt happen unless there is at least some load from cornering effort....and I havnt heard it turning left.

I have no idea where to start looking.....

Panhard rod bushes. Get someone to turn the wheel while parked and have a look for slop at each end of the rod. Plenty of info if you do a search.

Radius arm bushes, more prone especially if you have a lift, doubt it will be the steering or panard bushes, mine has 260,000ks and mine are fine, but Ive replaced my radius arm bushes a couple of time, same noise your desribing under turning/cornering load, more than likely the rear bush on the front.

Noise is from the front end. If its a single knock from 'in front of your feet' it'll be RH panhard bush. Mine does it when its shagged.

The other bush I'd check is the bottom shock mount bush, especially if your lift is over 2".

DL, just my experiences over a few years of owning my car, never had a problem with my Panard bushes, of coarse that doesn't mean you shouldn't check them, all the bushes should be checked, when I had the same issue I checked them all each time and it was the Radius arm bushes both times and the shock bush once.

I'm sure Hamish has a D2a with not a lot of Ks, which is why I doubt it could the Panard bushes, but I'm OK with being wrong.

Sound and thumps have a funny way of travelling

I have a similar noise when braking in a straight line. It sounds like a vacuum flap closing in a heater.

Check your heat shield above the centre muffler, they do wear around the bolt holes and become loose.

Same here, and you're right about noise migration.

I spent a lot of time chasing a very similar noise in my POS (with <5000 km old c *** PH bushes) that was caused by identical circumstances. Rebuilt the whole front RH hub twice, even using a different CV joint. Turned out to be the RH PH bush, and I will never use that brand of blue bushes ever again. (was NOT Superpro).

    cheers, DL

I hear you when you say sounds migrate....but i can hear a distinct click, and feel it though the brake pedal. Will check all of the above tomorrow....
Been thinking it through, and I also have a theory....I have an optima battery floating in the battery box without a strap right now.....bet it moves a LOT under a cornering load.

Going through the same exercise myself and the culprit seems to be the lower ball joints.

The giveaway was the collapsed rubber shrouds.

If it is this shop around for this as the $$$$ vary hugely for labour time.. A special press tool is needed to pop out and press in.

The ball joints have to be replaced in-situ as fixed to the axle housing the same as Jeep Wranglers so tracked down a Pedders who do a lot of these and their labour time $$$ is about half of other places.
