    Question EGR Removal, negatives??

    I have a 2003 TD5 D2a with about 140,000km on the odo which I have owned since new and to date has been very reliable. I am looking to keep it for a few years yet.

    I have searched and read about removal of the EGR system for benefits such as reduced obstruction in the inlet pipework, reduced exhaust particulates being fed back into the engine, resultant performance benefits, plus others. My question is what are the possible side effects or negatives for doing this mod? Does it increase EGTs with resultant increase in possibility of manifold warping, any fuel/mixture issues, etc?? Of course there is the negative of possible attention from the law if found to be removing pollution gear..

    My main concern is that my D2a has been very reliable and I want to keep it that way. I don’t want to chase a small benefit and create problems in other areas....

    None!

    While you're at it, remove the centre silencer box and replace with a straight-through pipe or a De Graff-type silencer, best bang for buck performance mod on a Td5.

    If you have some extra bucks, ceramic coating of the exhaust manifold and turbo housing is also a good mod.

    Finally, fit a Madman-type Engine Monitoring System, it WILL save you an engine at some point!

    I was in no hurry to replace mine until the pipe that runs between the EGR valve and the heat exchanger at the front of the engine cracked and almost caused an engine fire with the engine cover and melted quite a few wires.

    I had to bodge up a seal on the end of the heat exchanger to seal the exhaust gasses from escaping to keep driving on the side of the road, so sticking with the system is no without potential problems either.

    When you remove your EGR valve and see the restrictive piece of crap in the inlet manifold you will be happy you did. If you live in an extreme cold climate I think it is a good idea to help get you engine up to temp quicker, but for most people the negatives out way to positives.

    I noticed no positive or negative gains in performance, I think you would need to be on a dyno to see any real differences.

    the main benefit is in engine longevity. There is a disadvantage.

    IF a tree hugging hippy finds out youve done it they are all going to hold hands around your vehicle and sing kumbia at you.

    with a standard map (and some of the big maps) in the ECU the td5 complies to australian emission regs.
