You stated that the tappets have been done. Coul the noise be a loose tappet that has not been tightened or maybe a stripped rocker shaft bolt. The threads on the rocker shaft bolts are on ly aluminium in the cyl head and strip very easily if someone has had that area apart. The engine will still run as normal as the valve will still open enough even with the rocker shaft not secured. I have done this and took me a while to find the prob. As Justin C stated use a long screwdriver or steel rod to different parts of the engine and put it to your ear. This will help triangulate the problem / noise. Good luck.:)

dont forget the powersteering pump pully bolts, but if its on the otherside of the engine it may also be the flyweights/springs for the mech advance of the injector pump.

Have a similar noise in the 300tdi in my '97 Disco.
Research has indicated it could well be the cam plate in the fuel (injection) pump, or as has been noted, the injection advance mechanism.
I have rotated the pump by hand during timing belt replacement and the pump certainly rotates with a "snap" which I could well envisage turning into a rapid tap tap when running.

Hi and many thanks llandro & Blknight.aus
In one way Im quite glad that you both have suggested something in or around the injector pump as I have always had a feeling that the noise was in that area somewhere.
I will read up in the service book to see what I can find out.
If it turns out to be the flyweights is this a job for the injector mob or can this be tackled at home, second thoughts I might just leave it to a workshop to do. I will make a few phone calls today will let you all know the outcome.
Thanks to everybody for all your help.

If the lift pump is failing, or failed, and the injector pump is starving for fuel, it will tap and rattle, believe it or not:o
I have sworn black and blue an injector pump was faulty recently, but replaced a leaking lift pump in the interim and low and behold the ticking in the injector pump disappeared.

Any update on your problem, I'm interested as my wifes disco has the same problem. Sounds like a tappet noise in the injection pump. I'd be interested to see if the lift pump fixes the problem. I have been thinking of rebuilding the lift pump as I have suspected that it was a bit tired. At crusing speed the car has a slight surging problem, very very suttel but it's there. Could be that the lift pump has been slowly growing tired.
Cheers

I'm with Justin here. The hardening on the button of the vac pump breaks away and the face becomes grooved and uneven. Replaced one yesterday. Symptom - engine speed associated clack.
Got a mechanic's stethoscope? If not, spend the $25, and the detection of these noises becomes much more accurate. A good tool store will be able to supply.
I also agree with Justin about the lift pump. Wear in the pivot will produce similar sound as the rocker arm moves in a vertical plane on its pivot, but it's a much less obvious "tick".
It could be injection pump related, but if you're getting a racket from there, other symptoms (poor running, rough idle, etc) will be also present.

My apologies to everyone for not writing back sooner, More info on this noise,
As we live up near Townsville The vehicle was taken to Dorans Diesel to get the pump looked at mainly the flyweights as this seemed to be the general area of the noise,
Anyway to cut a very long story short they checked everything gave it a clean bill of heath But pointed out a couple of suspected problem area's,
I cant recall the technician name but he did show me,
1x The plate behind the crankshaft pulley was out of round and was wobbling it had left a very tiny mark on the timing cover where it had been rubbing.
2x The valve's under the rocker cover have tiny caps that sit on top of the valve stem, these wear out and should be replaced, If worn they can and most probably will make a tapping - ticking noise,
So with all this new info at hand I ordered the valve caps and removed the crankshaft pulley what I found was the plate behind was loose and a bit bent on one edge
[think it is called a dust seal but it looks just like an oil slinger]
After about 10 minutes of panel beating it back straight and to stop it from rattling I fixed it to the pulley using a small amount of sikaflex sealer using the old marks as a guide as to where it sat on the pulley, [very simple and straight forward].
Refitted the pulley made triple sure it was up to torque and tight,
Then I removed the rocker cover and valve assembly sure enough one or two of the caps had wear marks so I just replaced the whole set, these are a cheap to buy service item refitted everything back started up the engine and sure enough the noise has gone,
The engine purrs like a little kitten now,
I must thank everybody who has written in with all there ideas most of them I did check and some of them I replaced parts just for the heck of it, The only thing I should have done was to take a few pictures to put with the write up but it didnt enter my mind at the time,
I will in future,
But at this stage Im a :D chap

Good to hear Zealand.
I had missed this thread - as I read through I was thinking lash caps.
Them noises can be funny. As JC mentioned fuel delivery can make some funky noises. I had a mates 300 which I would have sworn was tappett noise - ended up being the bloody injectors??? Well new injectors fixed the noise anyways!

Hi roverrescue
Thats the word I was trying to think of " LASH CAPS " I knew there was going to be a techenical name for them,
Yep I agree sometimes its harder to find a noise than one would think so,But in my case it turned out to be very simple and cheap to fix,
Thanks,,:twobeers:l
