Some get a fuel knock in number 1 cyl. while its running crack the injector line to 1 and see if it goes away. Normally sounds like a tinney rattle under load. Often comes after you do a belt change, the more you advance the pump timing the worse it getts. Doesn't seem to worry them, Ive seen a few with it, Dad's 98 has been doing it for over 100k, still fine at 280k. I changed injectors and a pump on his car made no differance.
Correct, a quiet Tdi is retarded Tdi. Advancing the timing/ plunger lift a little makes them go very well, a 'Cracking' engine. From 1.54mm lift to 1.6mm will be all that is required.Quote:

I wonder could you please elaborate on the 0.06 plunger advance.
Ie, how does one measure/set this.
At the first timing belt change on my'97 Disco I advanced the static timing by what I calculated to be 1.5* at the injection pump.
I wonder how this compares to the 0.06 lift increase at tdc?
Now 250k.km. without any work other than replacing a rear pinion seal, it runs as well as it did new and unlike some keeps the floor clean underneath it!
(its just the bloody droopy headlining gets on my wick!)

Mike, 1.54mm plunger lift @TDC is factory, taking it to 1.6mm @ TDC gives a little more 'advance'.

I changed my timing belt on my 1995 300tdi Disco yesterday. Ran great but noticed a tingling noise on light and hard acceleration but gone on over run. I pulled it apart today and notice the new belt damaged on the front edge like the original belt...
Yesterday I replaced full kit with seals and crank sprocket, new tensioner and idler. Today I removed the cover to check pump timing and found rubber dust in the cover. The belt looked as if it was running too far forward on the idler pulley.
Any suggestions?
I would rather tow my Disco than drive a jap 4wd, but now I have no choice but to tow it!

I hope that I can help you in this matter,
It sounds like the Crankshaft gear the one with the big " O " ring has not seated all the way home on the crankshaft,
The way I checked mine was.
remove both key-ways
clean the crankshaft
fit the new gear with plenty of vaseline on the new " O " ring
then with the old crank gear I turned it backward fitted it in front of the new gear and using the crankshaft bolt as a pusher wound it in,
I found that the new gear went in quite a bit more than before,
The other thing I found was the dust seal plate fitted just behind the harmonic balance was not seating quite right it was very loose and when the engine was running you could see it vibrate, so all I did was to remove it cleaned all the parts and glued it back into position using a good silicon sealer, since then all the noise " tingling " has gone,
One last thing if the crankshaft gear is not seated all the way home on the crankshaft with the new O ring then the belt will want to ride on the outer edge causing belt wear and dust,
Don't forget to really tighten up the crankshaft bolt

I know it's been a while and the thread is a bit old but thought I'd add a bit.
I ended up fixing my wifes disco, I replaced the lift pump which did absolutely nothing. Changed the fuel filter, no differance. I had a few people that were mechanics and some that were just good on diesels and all thought that the pump was terminal.
Well just as I was about to give up and order a injection pump I remembered the sediment bowel, and low and behold. It was full of damn paper towel!!!!!!!!!!
To this day I cannot be certain how it got there, tank in the rear is a new 150l, I made and installed it. I have no paper towel in the workshop at all, all we can think is that some turd has rolled up a piece of towel at the survo and stuck it up the nozel at the bowser. The paper towel is exactly the same type, after many flushes and blowing out the lines I got the majourity of it (she still came to a rolling stop a couple of times on the highway).
It basicly just starved the fuel pump of fuel resulting in the tapping noise.
I now have a new tapping noise, I'm thinking that this may be the "lash caps" you guys are talking about, are these the valve stem collets? Dose anyone have a part no?

No they are not the valve stem colletts, the lash caps sit on the bit of valve stem that protrudes just above the spring retainer, the caps sit between the tip of the rocker arm and the top of the valve stem, Regards Frank.Quote:

Test each port of the pump for delivery, if one is low in pressure before remove the pump have a look if the fitting in the outlet in that port it is clean.
In my engine the port and injector was damaged. The dirt when trough the filter :(
I finished fitting new injectors and pump.
