    provent filter and another idea

ive seen pictures of the provent, but am unsure 100% of the reason for it.

i believe that it takes the oil from the breather hose, and returns it to the sump, rather than allowing it to enter the air intake.

if this is the case, if minimal oil is coming out of the breather hose, would it be possible to have the breather hose going straight to a reservoir, and just having a small breather hose from the reservoir to vent it and stop pressurizing?

i dont believe this would drain enough oil to worry about it... and i do an oil change every 6000-8000km.

    any help would be appreciated

    cheers
    jack

Technically it is illegal to turn your (OEM) closed crankcase vent system into an open vent system (the same way it is illegal to remove your cats or EGR).

The other point, is that you will lose more oil than you think - up to 300 ml between services. This is the lighter fraction of the oil, so without it your engine will sludge-up more rapidly.

Catch cans are not much use on a turbo diesel. You would be surprised how blowby you actually get.

It's basically a catch can but has two major features over a catch can in that it has a coalescing filter to separate the oil vapour and filter the returned crank vent gases while also returning the collected oil.

Catchcans work on petrol or diesel in exactly the same way. the difference with catchcans is they generally have no separation media and rely on slowing the gas flow to suspend oil vapour. You then need to clean them every so often.
Doof doof boy wonders use them in bling toy racers plumbed the same way but you now see a lot of provents being used now in place of.

    Cheers

    Andrew

I read some where it should also stop oil vapour from collecting in your intercooler.

the provent is the catchcan right?

just so im still on the right page.

im doing some modifications to keep as clean as possible, then will move onto performance.

ive done all the 'fun' stuff like suspension, bar work, spotties, uhf, tyres...

now im doing the EGR and provent, and any other little things that might help keep her clean...

then the next step is intercooler, chip/comp upgrade, and possibly a new exhaust if needed.

Saying a provent is the same as a catch can is like saying the Wright brothers' plane and an F111 are both the same. Sure, they can both fly under their own power, but with hugely varying levels of success.
