300tdi heads - "Turner" performance vs OEM

I recall at least three AULROlians buying and installing the Turner performance head in the past 12 months or so.

I am near to ordering up components to rebuild a freshly overhauled block.

Just wondering of there is any noticeable difference between a Turner 510GBP performance head and Paddocks OEM 295GBP. Obviously with the strong aussie peso and weak GBP now is a good time to source - but Im not sure whether the extra 300AUD is a good investment.

I believe the gains are mostly in cooling etc etc which sounds a good idea to me considering 300tdi propensity to get hot!

Any real world user feedback would be appreciated. Also would be good to know whether you used a multilayer steel (MLS) head gasket or composite (OEM) gasket with the head.

    Many regards,
    Steve

    thanks JC, appreciate the feedback!

I recall you mentioning you dont like using MLS gaskets... with a view to VNT and fueling would you still recommend composite?

It is a personal preferrence Steve ONLY. I would use composite still, but IF you are building a new engine, with a freshly decked block, Shim steel gasket would be OK. I still don't like them though. Funny they work fine on a Td5 ....

The VNT and fuelling shouldn't really make that much difference, as EGT's could be quite safe still(HOPEFULLY), and 20psi isn't really THAT high for a composite gasket (Swallow THAT Hilux boys...)

To expand on my Turner eng performance head experience, I have a customer who bought one for his 1995 110 for me to fit. This vehicle has stock exhaust and intercooler, stock gearing and 235/85/16 tyres, I performed the following: a new timing belt and 1.6mm plunger lift mod, and Fuelling adjustments to the pump. After this it would run the speedo to the stops, (He did this, not me) and would hold 100km/h up hills in 5th that he would normally be flat out in 4th. He is VERY happy with it.
He just returned from a trip to the cape and Weipa etc, towed a LC80 150km after it broke down, too

    thattl do me Im sure.
to be honest 95% of my kays are off road going north where generally 80-100kph is the norm... a bit more oomph when loaded and towing would be nice but thats what L is for eh!

Ill build it up and bolt it in before spending the dosh on the VNT...

    Regards
    Steve
