    1.6mm plunger lift (JC?)

Have a question about this mod

I'm about to have it done at a Bosch diesel agent. What am I asking for? If I just say "please adjust the plunger lift to 1.6mm at TDC" that'll make sense? Isn't this just an adjustment to the injection timing? (For some reason I'm thinking its a change to fuel volume)

I suspect my Tdi is retarded, it's always been slower than the average and its far too quiet. I've got all the timing tools, so is it necessary to insert the flex plate pin and injection pump pin and make sure it all lines up first before taking it to them, or is it the same adjustment?

I wouldn't bother with getting an agent to do it, The'yll lock the pump and set it up, but it'll no doubt be way different when you come to time it. Do it when the pump is ON the vehicle, and fitted with a new correctly tensioned timing belt . You will need a dial indicator and a timing tool, the same as required to fit a 1HZ rotary pump, as this is what I use.

You can give me a call if you like tomorrow, 0408 995 635.

The main problem may actually be the 'base' timing anyway, the 1.6mm mod is an enhancement, not a necessary tweak for standard adjustments.

Edit:Oops, should've read your post carefully first, are you taking the vehicle to them? If so, then yes ask for 1.6mm at TDC. Factory is 1.54mm. It is still pointless unless a new belt is fitted first.

Yep taking the whole beasty to them. Belt was done 40k ago

So if it was timed slightly out when the belt was done, thats not going to matter?

It won't matter, they will set it up, but yes it is probably the cause of the lack of power and quietness.

If you have all the timing tools, it may be best for you to check the timing first, save you some $$ and you'd get more familiar with the whole procedure. Who knows, if it is way out, then adjusting it correctly will transform the vehicle enough so you may not require a tweak anyway.

Give me a call if you need me to explain the procedure, but IIRC there is a section in the good oil about check/ adjust? Is it an auto?

Thanks muchly, shall give you a call if [when!] I get stuck.

It is covered in the good oil and I've seen a good video on youtube showing the procedure. It is an auto, avg fuel economy over 40,000km has been 12.26 /100km.

The auto ones are a little harder to check as the timing pin for the crank is difficult to see, thats why I asked.

    Good luck

Ughh, what a giant pain in the arse.

Timing pin for the crank was easy enough to get in, but the last person to tighten the aircon belt tensioner rounded off two of the bolt heads. No idea how the hell I'm going to get them out. (Short of pulling the whole cover - which isn't an option till the tbelt is due in 40k... which may or may not mean no aircon if the belt even needs adjustment or breaks.)

May have to find a small cold chisel and remove them that way, replacements are easy enough, M8 X 25mm IIRC.

Another option if you've got enough access, try with a decent set of vice grips (real ones - not the soft-jawed chinese replicas). Clamp them on as hard as you can and give a bit of a wriggle to let the jaws bite in before you try and undo the bolt.

Funny, the whole left side of the sump, oil filter and the backplate where the inspection cover is was saturated in diesel. I'm thinking it may be a leak from around the lift pump area that is causing the power loss and bad economy, although looking from above I can't see any evidence of a leak. It hasn't had the pigtail mod or the spacer by the looks of things and its a 97, so I suppose that could be a possibility.
