    Disco S1 3.9ltr V8

    hi,
i bought a disco S1 V8 last week and did my first drive to the country on the weekend.
I love the car but have a few issue I wanted to ask about.

    1) the air con leaks from the dash down to the driver and passenger feet, its very hot water at times and before I go digging around with screwdrivers and what not I thought I would see if anyone has ever had similar issues. If so what was the cause and the best way to fix it?
    2) The gear box crunches mildly into third gear, is this just a matter of draining the box and filling it with some decent oil, are these cars known for having good and strong running gear?
    3) It doesn’t seem to have as much pull as I would have thought for a V8, I found especially in 5th gear cruising around 110kms that even the smallest of hills would have me back into fourth otherwise my speed would wash off. Could this be a matter of pressure in the engine or gearing ratios? Im a little lost with this one.

Otherwise the car is great, had a heap of fun running it through the quarry on the property I was at and the car did everything it should have.

    Responses greatly appreciated.

Hi I would check your aircon drains there are two in total one either side of the g/tunnel you can get to the outlets from the heater box from inside right at the front of center console where the little rubber pipes connect and exit the car through the g/tunnel you can access these underneath your car above the gearbox the have a small rubber insert you can remove just watch out for getting rained on when you remove them, they commonly block causing water to rise in the heater box which then gets heated by the matrix and then shoots put over your left ankle. The gearbox I would drain to see what bit's of debris you get and see if there is any swarf brass for baulk ring grey silvery for bearings or bits of gears then if none then refill and try if still crunching further investigation would be required. As for power I am not sure about a v8 as I drive tdi I know what mine can do I would at least check all the tune.

My V8i is a little tetchy going into 2nd and 3rd, I suspect the syncro's are worn. I just live with it, if I get the revs right it slips into gear ok.

As for power output from the engine.....It's a 16 year old car so It's getting on a bit and the Rover V8's were never known for being powerful without tuning work....Plus it's a 2 ton 4x4.....

I have a 3.9 ltr V8 on LPG, I had similar issues with power fading on hills when running on petrol, I did a full service, plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor button, and most importantly the air filter. You have to be careful with Airfilter, some fit box well and some dont, usually the ones that dont quite fit well will restrict draw. But with a good fitting one, it was a major improvement. I also run tyres a little higher than normal as the vehicle is heavy. Keep in mind they do like to rev, so dont be scared to feed it, and if that does not work, get a timing light and ensure that is set right, amatuers fiddle with the timing all the time and might get better idle but muck up high end timing curves.

thanks for this, i will go over everything this weekend and see what the result is, i had thought it could be airflow. apparently all the plugs and leads where changed about a year ago, maybe the plugs could do with a clean/replace. cheers for your help.

yeah i suspected it could just be an age thing. ill give it a good once over and see how it goes.

mine could be the syncro by the sound of it because like you if i get it reving up before i change it is smooth. oh well ill live with it as well.
    cheers for the reply.

I also dropped the ATF that was in the gearbox and refilled with Castrol VMX 80. It didn't cure the 'tetchy' box but it certainly helped. As Seth has rightly pointed out, a good service will help too....

There is some excellent reading in the Good Oil section of this forum concerning gearbox oils.....
