Sussing out possibly a Discovery for myself

    Hi Guys and Gals,

    I have been looking for 2003-2004 D2 TD5 SE.

I have come across a S and it looks really good, but my sharp eyes have picked up that the rear airbag suspension has been changed to yellow springs. Is it hard to reverse that modification? What are the pros and cons of doing this to the D2? The car has ACE and I am assuming that this would still be working without the air springs.

Can anyone give me an exact breakdown of the difference from the S to the SE? Does the 2003 S have central diff lock and how can I check if thats fitted? Thanks in advance. Kane

This is the D2 I am looking at.

    Looks a nice car,
yes it will have CDL, all the D2a's do.

You would need to check underneath the passengers side to see if the compressor is still there,(and working) bags are cheap (dont get dunlop atm,,)
I think the bottom spring plate is removable?? If you look close thee MAY be airlines tucked away in the rear wheel arches.

S to SE,? could be anything depending on options at time of original purchase,

Just want to chime in here for a second - it relates to the subject. The missus will be buying a different vehicle soon, and rather than another Rangie - I couldn't convince her, she is looking at Disco II's, which I am still very happy about. Not being familiar with these vehicles, can anyone give me some thoughts on the TD5 engine - what to look for or what to avoid? The couple I have looked at already have had about 250K Km on them - what should I be watching out for with these sort of KM?

    Sorry to hijack the thread...

    Cheers - Gav.

Best bet is to use the search, and type "TD5 "

Yeah, tried that - I went through the first 100 threads or so of the 3,222 threads that come up from that search. I will keep looking, but if anyone had any ideas in the meantime they would be apppreciated.

Service history! Not just stamps in the book but receipts for work done. Oil in the coolant tank, low oil level, high oil level.

I think the SE had sunroofs. The HSE has electric leather seats.

The one on carsales has CDL as the transfer lever does not move that far right on non CDL models.

03/04 all have cdl fitted again.
Check for leaks, rust under floor, smooth gear box and transfer case engages.
Air-con and all electrics are working.
    Service history and possible accidents.
See if it has a low coolant alarm fitted and colour and condition of coolant.

Best advise though is spend the $$$ on a full health check by a Land Rover mechanic.
Also drive several models as no 2 seem to drive the same from my experience anyhow.
See if you like it too.
TD5 not super quick but frugal and must be well maintained.
V8 can be will be very thirsty(16-25L/100)average and watch for slipped liners if overheated. Big bill.

Get one with leather, very comfy, easy to look after and easy to clean.

    Good luck.

Well, I had a look at a the discovery I mentioned in the first post. Dissapointing, has been hacked alot and was missing the compressor, the wiring was there and the air lines had been cut. Dodgy. It also had an antenna mount stuck right in the middle of roof and the roof lining was hanging down a little. Gave that a miss. I came across another goody.

No ACE or Auto Leveling. Am I really missing much with these two features not included? The car is IMMACULATE!! not a scratch.. mark or thing on the silver body. Underneath is immaculate too.. Owned by an elderly couple who selling due to illness. They want $24,000 inc RWC for it. Its not an S or SE and only has 5 seats, in which I wouldnt use the other two anyway really. Any thoughts guys.. Is it really worth waiting to find one with ACE and Auto leveling? Or are they more trouble than they are worth? Some dealer mentioned to me that the ACE is noisy??

I would take the 5 seater, same as the one i have now.I have had two other earlier models, one with ACE,& don't miss it at all.Only more to go wrong in my opinion(sorry Tombie)

Had SLS on the two others,it is good, but find the coiler OK.

Probably more important to get a well serviced & looked after vehicle as you have found,if you want trouble free motoring.

The D2a's are by far the best of the D2's.

It may also be a 'classic' if it was a runout model.
