I would change the oil and filters, cheap insurance, I would also be changing fuel filters and clean out the fuel sediment bowl (do TD5's have them), peace of mind, Regards Frank.
Hi everyone.
I use my TD5 D2 only occasionally, and in 2010 would have done no more than 5000 km in it.
Its last oil change was in December 2009 and I am planning on taking it away shortly (and put on approx 1500km).
All filters were changed back in 09, and I used Penrite HPR 5 Diesel oil. Obviously I am under the kilometers that the oil can handle, but is the amount of time a concern?
Or should I give the car a run for this trip and change afterwards?
I don't really mind changing the oil and filters, but I guess the question of changing the oil every 5000km seems a bit conservative.
Any thoughts?
Regards
Chris

Time is a concern. The oil is way overdue for a change, especially if a lot of your trips are short ie less than 20 km.
Others I'm sure will explain the technicalities of why this is the case.

based on your usage I strongly reccomend a 12/24 month maintenenance schedule.
engine, brake and clutch fluid at 12
^^ and everything else with oil or bearings in it at 24.

nope brake fluid is highly hygroscopic.
assuming your not hitting the KMs barrier your hitting the time barrier in most places your brake fluid will be out of spec by about the 18 month mark within co-ee of the tropics and between and it can be less than 12.
most people who use the landy for four wheeling already know how to check the bearings in the wheel hubs and if done right are usually good for 24 months diffs are about the same.
If you read the manual the servicing schedule for the landy it covers normal driving, most of Australia falls into the arduous or extreme driving conditions category, tazzie for cold and wet and everywhere else for heat/dust, Melbourne for both and sometimes in the same day.
my numbers are for change intervals, not just inspect, you should inspect every thing that has a liquid (or grease) in it every service/6monthly. In reality on paper you'd do it monthly but in reality a quick slide of the head under the body work to check the drips is enough if you drive it at least once a week or so.

I do my Zook every 6 months. But when it go's off road it gets a hidding. But it only has a 4 litre sump.![]()
My Defender & Series 1 don't get used regularly so I change the oil every 12 months. More for peace of mind than anything.
When I got the Series 1 the engine oil hadn't been changed for about 10 years (I think the diff oil hadn't been changed for much longer) and it hasn't caused any problems so far, but of course I don't use it that often to throw up any problems. It had only been used for firewood collection during that period so sat idle mainly in the summer months.
Not sure about changing the filter every year although I normally do, again for peace of mind. Its job is to filter particles out of the oil so using it for several years with low kilometers shouldn't be a problem. Not sure if the element could fail long term but I've never seen this. The only consideration is the dirty oil left in the filter if you don't change it which immediately contaminates the new clean oil !
An oil and filter change is a cheap 'insurance'
