Ignition key snapped in the lock ...

    Howdy,

Drove my D1 home the other day, switched off the engine, pulled out the key and half stayed in the ignition lock.

Is there any way to get the front part of the key out without disassembling the whole thing?

    Regards,
    Norm

if you're not an amatuer locksmith, can you easily get it to one ?

('cause I think that's what you will need)

I can't get the car to one. So far everyone I've asked has told me to get the ignition lock out of the car first, otherwise the locksmith charges a fortune.

Getting the ignition barrel out is pretty easy. I replaced mine in a D1 in about 20 minutes with no prior experience.

The innards of the barrell had collapsed in mine, bought a new ignition barrel from Paddocks - about $50 to my door, had it rekeyed to match the rest of the car $35 local locksmith. Bunged it in, solved.

So I'd just remove it yourself and take it to a locksmith. The most difficult bit is undoing the bolts that hold the barrel in place as when they are tightened the head of them snaps off. WD40 for half hour, then a small flat screwdriver and gentle hammer taps started it turning and then just undo by fingers.

Thanks! That really helps because I had no idea of what to do with the damn thing.

if its not snapped off too far in with the appropriate dental scraper you can jag them out sometimes. a hammered scribe will also work if you are lucky.

I'll try some WD40 and a thin prong or something first. If that doesn't work I'll see about pulling it out.

    Thanks all! Good advice!

.. just a suggestion, I used a centre-punch instead of the screwdriver, but 'anything' will work as long as its got a sharp edge AND is tough enough to bite into the security bolts... or whats left of them.
    Replaced them with suitable allen-bolts.

Have a couple of Valium or a Scotch to get you nice and calm and relaxed... trick is good aim!

    - Key snapped off at the base, but too far in to dig out. Ran for week with the IGN switch hanging free...
