    Sounds electrical to me, bad connection or dodgy temp sensor. A normal cooling issue like thermostat trouble, blocked radiator etc. shouldn't cause "sudden spikes" on the temp gauge as you describe.

    The gauge is not linear and on a td5 will sit normal from about 88-110c

    It will only spike over this quickly to the top and, as the TD5 goes into safe mode will drop power and cut fuel to cool cylinders.

    Seen it enough to know the scenario well.
