On my V8 I did have problems finding a spot (needs to be on the block or head but not the thermostat housing) and ended up putting it on one of the bolts that the lifting points use.
I believe you need to drive around and get the engine up to operating temperature, read off the TM2 temperature and set the alarm at 10 degrees hotter. To set at a "standard" temp is not wise as "normal" temp will differ depending where the sender is. For example my sender is in the air flow of the fan so will be a little cooler than if it was secured to a inlet manifold bolt deep in the engine valley where there is less airflow.
