    Caterpillar (CAT) AGM batteries

    Dear All,

Anyone got any experience with CAT AGM batteries - see page 5 of

    http://www.cat.com/cda/files/1386197/7/PEHJ0073-02.pdf

I got a quote from them today for a new cranking battery - model 175-4370 which was $144 +GST which I thought was very reasonable - so I thought I'd ask them tomorrow about their AGM range.

I am looking for a 100ah+ AGM to mount in the back of my Carry me Camper - but the way the specs of the AGM batteries are described, I'm not sure of the most suitable mode. Can anyone help?

I thought maybe model no 250-0479 might be the go - just based on size and weight? I have plenty of room.

    Tim

Good price on the N70 size.
But by my reading that 250-0479 would only be about 40AH at the 20 hour rating? 45kg is pretty heavy for 40AH.

If it were me Id at the price of the N70 (175-4370) size Id just buy a pair for the vehicle and a pair for the camper. At 27kg and 100AH each would give plenty of spark between all four.

How do you work out 40ah roverrescue? As you say seems very low for the size/weight of the battery.

I also thought the 175-4370 was a fair bit longer than a N70.

For others interest, here is the quote received this am. Thoughts?

250-0476- $247.31 plus. Available in Cat Melbourne, Can have in 2 days.
250-0477- $278.56 plus. Available overseas (freight extra).
250-0478- $332.96 plus. Available overseas. (freight extra)
250-0479- $489.31 plus. No Longer Available.

I believe that the 20hr rating on the AGM was 6.6AH per cell. 6 cells, makes total rating 40AH give or take? For a 50kg battery thee seems low - maybe I misread?

Just measured my N70 marine pro width and height were same as quoted for the CAT length was about 10mm shorter. In a defender length is a non issue. Height is important!

With the extra $100 per AGM plus the charging issues associated with AGM I still prefer the idea of using 4 batts the same.

My father and a mate bought 2 CAT batteries at the same time. They were deep cycle, not AGM. Both failed prematurely and CAT did not honour the warranty on either because they had not been used for their intended purpose - something like that. One was in a campervan with a dual battery system and the other a caravan.

So before you buy, check out the conditions on their warranty.

G'day lads I work for Hastings Deering the cat dealer here in queensland
your right cat won't warrent the batteries after 3 months for a deep cycle (unless you bulls**t to them and tell that you are using it for the starting battery) have a look at part number 250-0480 as i just purchased 1 for a mate of mine to run his fridge. not sure of the exact specs but he is happy with its performance so far.
