Thread: Starting problems - air cleaner maybe?

I recently changed the oul bath type air cleaner on my S3 for the can type with paper element to fit on the 186. Now I find that I have more trouble starting than with the old filter. I used to hit the key and hardly even notice the starter turning, even after not driving it over the weekend. It would just kick and would run smoothly straight away. I also used to not hear much fuel pump (electric) running before it slowed, wheras now it runs for longer before it slows down, meaning there must be less fuel in the bowl and it has to top it up. Could this be caused by heat from the engine transferred by the air cleaner to the carby, evaporating the fuel and maybe flooding the motor causing the difficult starts. I haven't tried swapping it back yet but it seems a bit to coincidental to ignore.

Any tips of what I should be looking for?

you didnt knock anything while changing the filter housings or setting up the holden style filter on the carby did you?

I have a vague recolection of a similar problem where changing the air filter housing stuffed the choke so it was always burning more fuel.

remove the filter to get to the carby and it was all sweet, put the filter assembly back on tho...
