swivel ball - diff housing gasket falling out

as above in my 93 disco, the gasket between the swivel ball and diff housing is broken and falling out, causing diff oil to leak out

is it possible to replace the gasket without needing to disturb the swivel seals etc? i would really rather not mess with them at the moment

Disconnect steering joints and brake line. Undo bolts holding swivel ball to axle housing. Remove entire assembly and axle. Replace gasket, use aviation forma gasket sealant. Refit entire assembly, reconnect steering, reconnect brake line. Bleed brakes. Done.

Probably best to drain diff oil first and refill afterwards. Be careful, the swivel / hub / brake assembly is heavy.

If the flange has come loose enough for the gasket to move, then the reason is usually that the bolts have stretched and may break .

I recommend that you replace the bolts at the same time.
This was more common with older Rangies with fewer bolts in the flange, but can happen after a few rock shelf bounces.

I have never fitted a paper gasket back to one of these. All I do is undo the bolts, move the swivel assembly enough to get a finger in and then run some instant gasket around the mating faces (having cleaned them first). When you tighten the bolts back up I always put some thread lock on them to prevent them coming loose again. I also wipe off the excess instant gasket.

They nearly always do not come loose, they stretch.
